How to use All Time Zones
The page opens on your own zone, taken from your device. Everything else is arranged around that anchor, so every other time on the page is already an answer to "what time is it there, right now, for me".
Confirm the zone shown at the top matches where you actually are — if you are travelling or behind a VPN, it may not. Find the zone you care about by city, country, or abbreviation. Cities are the safest search: abbreviations collide, and countries sometimes span several offsets.
Read the offset next to it. That is the current offset, not the standard one — if the place is on summer time, the difference already includes it. Add zones you check often so they sit side by side and you can scan them in one glance.
Offsets, abbreviations and other traps
Time zone names are less reliable than they look. The same three letters can mean two different offsets on opposite sides of the world, and a country's name tells you nothing about how many zones it contains. This is why the list is organised around places rather than labels.
Abbreviations are ambiguous. Several are used by more than one region. If precision matters, quote the city or the offset instead. Offsets are not always whole hours. Some zones sit on a half-hour or quarter-hour boundary, which is exactly where mental arithmetic goes wrong.
One country can hold many zones. Large countries often do; "the time in that country" may not be a single answer. Summer time is not universal. Some places observe it, some never have, and the dates differ where it exists. The gap between two cities can change twice a year even though neither of them moved relative to the sun.
The clock is a political instrument wearing an astronomical costume. Nothing about it is guaranteed by the sun.
Working across zones without the arithmetic
Most scheduling mistakes are not mistakes about time — they are mistakes about which day it is. When the difference is large enough, "tomorrow morning" for one person is "this evening" for the other, and both are correct.
Two habits remove almost all of it. First, name the zone every time you write a time down: "09:00" invites the reader to assume their own clock, "09:00 in your zone, 14:00 in mine" does not. Second, when a meeting sits near a weekend or the start of a month, check the date on both sides before agreeing, because one of you may be on the far side of a boundary the other cannot see.
Reading the page at a glance
Each row carries the same three things: the place, its current local time, and how far that is from yours. The difference is signed — ahead of you or behind you — so you never have to work out the direction. If a place is on summer time at this moment, the reading you see already accounts for it; there is nothing left to adjust.
For a quick sanity check, look at a zone you already know. If that one reads correctly, the rest of the page is anchored correctly too.
Questions and answers
- Why does the difference between two cities change during the year?
- Because one of them observes summer time and the other does not, or because they switch on different dates. Neither city has changed its position; only its clock has.
- Can I trust a time zone abbreviation on its own?
- Not reliably. Some abbreviations are used by more than one part of the world. A city name or a numeric offset removes the ambiguity.
- The zone shown for me looks wrong. What now?
- It comes from your device's settings, so a VPN, a mis-set operating system clock, or travelling without updating your device will all shift it. Correct it on the device and the page follows.
