Who lives on UTC+5

This offset covers a broad band of Central and South Asia, plus a slice of Russia and part of the Indian Ocean. It is the standard time of several countries in full, with no internal splits: Pakistan — Pakistan Standard Time (PKT). Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad.

Uzbekistan — Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara. Turkmenistan — Ashgabat. Tajikistan — Dushanbe. Maldives — Malé. Russia — Yekaterinburg Time, covering the Urals and part of Western Siberia: Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Perm, Ufa, Tyumen.

Kazakhstan — the whole country, following its 2024 move to a single time zone: Almaty, Astana, Shymkent. France — the Kerguelen Islands and Île Amsterdam, in the southern Indian Ocean. Yekaterinburg is the largest Russian city on this offset and a useful anchor: it sits two hours ahead of Moscow, which is a quicker sum to do in your head than converting through UTC twice.

Daylight saving on this offset

Nothing on UTC+5 moves its clocks. Russia abolished seasonal changes in 2014 and has kept permanent standard time since. Pakistan experimented with summer time in 2002 and again in 2008 and 2009, then dropped it; the offset has been steady since. Central Asian states stopped shifting clocks in the 1990s and 2000s.

The practical consequence is worth spelling out. Your distance to UTC+5 changes only when your own region springs forward or falls back. A caller in London is five hours behind in winter and four hours behind in summer — and both times, the person in Tashkent did nothing at all.

Three habits cover almost every case: Convert your local time to UTC first, then add five. Two small sums beat one big one. Watch the date. UTC 20:00 is 01:00 the next day on UTC+5, so a Friday evening call in the Americas lands on Saturday morning in Tashkent.

Name the city, not the offset, when you write to someone. "09:00 in Islamabad" survives a calendar invite; "09:00 UTC+5" invites a guess.

Neighbouring offsets

UTC+5 has unusual company. It is flanked by two of the world's few half-hour and quarter-hour zones: UTC+5:30 to the southeast for India and Sri Lanka, and UTC+5:45 for Nepal. That means the flight from Karachi to Delhi crosses a border and gains thirty minutes, while Kathmandu adds another fifteen on top. To the west, UTC+4 covers the Gulf and the Caucasus; to the east, UTC+6 runs across Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan.
