Daylight saving time, or DST, is the seasonal practice of moving civil clocks forward, usually by one hour, to shift more usable daylight into the evening. When DST begins, one local hour is skipped; when it ends, one local hour repeats. Not every country uses DST, and the dates are not universal.

In most of the United States, DST currently begins at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2:00 AM local daylight time on the first Sunday in November. In the European Union, the coordinated change is on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. Check a place on the world clock because exceptions and future legal changes matter.

What “spring forward” means

At the spring transition, clocks move ahead. In a typical US transition, 1:59:59 AM is followed by 3:00:00 AM. Local times from 2:00 through 2:59 do not occur. The day is therefore one hour shorter by the civil clock.

This creates a real scheduling problem. An event entered for 2:30 AM may be rejected, shifted, or interpreted differently by software because that wall time does not exist in that location on that date. A duration such as “eight hours from now” remains an elapsed period, but the ending wall clock may appear nine hours later.

What “fall back” means

At the autumn transition, clocks move back and an hour occurs twice. A clock can show 1:30 AM, advance through the hour, return to 1:00 AM, and show 1:30 AM again. The civil day is one hour longer.

A bare timestamp such as “1:30 AM” is ambiguous during the repeated hour. Systems distinguish the two occurrences using an offset: one might be 1:30 at UTC-4 and the other 1:30 at UTC-5. For logs, travel, medication, or incident reports, record the numeric offset or UTC time as well as local time.

Why daylight saving time was adopted

DST changes the social clock, not the amount of sunlight. Its purpose is to align more waking and working hours with daylight during the part of the year when days are longer. Supporters have cited evening recreation, commerce, and reduced need for lighting. The actual effects depend on climate, latitude, behavior, and modern energy use.

The tradeoff is darker mornings and a twice-yearly disruption. Close to the equator, seasonal daylight changes are small, so shifting clocks provides little reason. At high latitudes, summer and winter daylight differences can be so large that one clock hour cannot solve them.

United States schedule and exceptions

Under the present federal schedule, most participating US areas start on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November. The transition is defined in local time, so it rolls across the country rather than happening everywhere at one UTC instant.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe DST. US territories also have exceptions. The Navajo Nation observes DST even though it is largely within Arizona, which makes a simple state-level rule insufficient. When planning locally, select the actual city or recognized time-zone region.

A rule such as “second Sunday” produces a different calendar date every year. Do not copy last year’s date. Find dates with the date tools, compare intervals with the days calculator, and confirm the official rule for the year concerned.

European schedule

European Union countries move to summer time on the last Sunday in March and return on the last Sunday in October. The change is coordinated at 01:00 UTC, so the local clock reading differs by zone. The United Kingdom and many European countries outside the EU follow a similar seasonal rhythm, but participation must be checked individually.

Europe and the United States do not switch on the same dates. For several weeks in March and for a shorter period around late October or early November, the usual difference between American and European cities can change by one hour. Recurring international meetings are especially vulnerable.

Who does not use DST?

Most countries do not currently make seasonal clock changes. Many tropical countries never adopted the practice because their daylight length changes little. Others tried it and abolished it. Examples of countries that do not currently use seasonal DST include Japan, India, China, Iceland, Russia, Turkey, and most countries in Africa and Asia.

“Abolished DST” can mean different final arrangements. A jurisdiction may remain on what was formerly standard time, select a different permanent offset, or change policy again later. Russia stopped seasonal clock changes, and Turkey uses one year-round offset. Brazil ended its seasonal practice in 2019. These are examples, not a permanent global list.

Rules are political decisions and can change with limited notice. A printed offset table gradually becomes wrong; an actively maintained time-zone database can incorporate new legislation. Browse capital city clocks or largest cities for place-specific current time.

How clock changes affect everyday life

For an interval, use a monotonic timer rather than repeatedly subtracting the displayed clock. The online timer is appropriate for a set duration, while the stopwatch measures elapsed time. Use an alarm for a local wall-clock appointment.

How phones and websites know the right time

A reliable system starts with a stable instant, generally represented relative to UTC, then applies the rules for a named geographic zone. The rules say which offset applies at that instant. This is more capable than storing “New York equals UTC-5,” because New York can use UTC-4 during daylight time.

Phones and computers receive time-zone database updates through operating-system updates. A website can use the browser’s reported zone and maintained server data. A fixed-offset page such as UTC+3 intentionally remains three hours ahead of UTC; it is not a substitute for a city whose offset changes.

How to prepare for a clock change

  1. Confirm that automatic date, time, and time-zone settings are enabled.
  2. Install operating-system updates, which can include rule changes.
  3. Check clocks in cars, ovens, and simple appliances that may not update.
  4. Verify alarms and calendar events on both sides of the transition.
  5. For international calls, send a calendar invitation and state the city and UTC offset.
  6. For the spring change, move bedtime gradually earlier if the lost hour is difficult for you.

Do not manually change a phone that is already set to automatic time; it may then change twice. In the morning, compare it with another trusted source. If traveling, confirm whether the device selected the destination zone rather than retaining the home zone.

Recurring events need a clear anchor

“Every Monday at 9:00 AM” normally means 9:00 by the local clock, even when its UTC offset changes. “Every 168 hours” describes equal elapsed intervals and can land at 8:00 or 10:00 locally after a transition. Calendar applications usually favor the first interpretation for meetings, while automated systems may use either.

Ask which promise matters: a stable local hour for people, or a stable interval for a process. Then test an occurrence on each side of the next transition. This single check catches many calendar, payroll, and automation mistakes before they reach users.

Scheduling without ambiguity

For a future local event, store the intended local time and named zone, such as “2027-10-31 09:00 Europe/Paris,” rather than only “UTC+1.” For a global deadline, store one UTC instant and let each viewer convert it. A countdown communicates the remaining duration without requiring everyone to calculate offsets.

If an event falls inside a missing or repeated hour, choose an explicit policy. During spring, move it forward or select a valid time. During autumn, specify the first or second occurrence with an offset. Quiet assumptions are what produce surprises.
