How it works

Count it as elapsed time. Two years from a start date is the second anniversary of that date. Three years is the third. Between them sits a band one year wide. “2-3 years Dagestan” uses that band as the length of a stay. It does not pin a start day. Without a start day you can still name the length; you cannot name the end calendar square.

The phrase spread from a conversation between Islam Makhachev and Daniel Cormier about youth wrestling. Makhachev’s wording, in the form fans repeat, is to send someone “two-three years Dagestan and forget,” with a later aside that you might call once in six months. Cormier treated it as more time than he would send a child. Makhachev later said he had not meant it as a joke: on his account, a wrestler who actually did those years would come back at least as an American champion. That is his claim, not a measurement on this page. The countable part is the two-to-three-year length.

Two calendar years contain 730 days if 29 February does not sit inside the span, or 731 if a leap day does. Three calendar years contain 1095 or 1096 days on the same rule. 2024 and 2028 are leap years; 2025, 2026, and 2027 are not. A stay that starts 3 September 2026 and runs two years ends 3 September 2028, and that span includes 29 February 2028, so it is 731 days, not 730. A three-year stay from the same start ends 3 September 2029 and still includes that one leap day, so 1096 days. Always check which Februarys fall inside the window instead of multiplying 365 by 2 or 3 and hoping.

Name the start date, or admit you only have a length. Add 24 months for the short end, 36 months for the long end. Inspect Februarys in the middle for a 29th. Convert to weeks only after the day count exists: divide by 7, keep the remainder days.

Forget, in that sentence, is the instruction to stop shortening the stay. Two to three years will not compress into a camp because the nickname is catchy.

What the length is for, and what it is not

Dagestan is a republic in the North Caucasus, inside the Russian Federation, with Makhachkala as its capital. The meme treats it as a place where wrestling training is daily and long. A length of 24 to 36 months is apprenticeship scale: many seasons, not a holiday. It is longer than a school term, longer than a typical sports camp, and shorter than a childhood. If someone offers “two to three weeks” as a substitute, as Cormier did in the original exchange, that is a different quantity. Weeks are not years with the first letter changed.

A duration does not describe visas, schools, coaches, or whether a child should travel. Those are separate decisions. This page only keeps the span honest so the joke and the plan do not swap numbers. Six months, which Makhachev offered as a call-home interval, is one quarter of two years and one sixth of three years. It is a check-in cadence, not a replacement length.

Turning 2-3 years into a calendar

If the stay starts today, 3 September 2026, the two-year mark is 3 September 2028 and the three-year mark is 3 September 2029. Remaining time in 2026 does not change those end dates. People who hear “two to three years” as “sometime later” are using a mood. People who hear it as a pair of anniversaries can mark both squares and treat everything between them as the promised band.

In weeks, two years is 104 weeks plus leftover days (105 weeks plus leftover if a leap day is inside and you still want whole weeks from the day count). Three years is 156 weeks plus leftover days, or 156 weeks and extra days when a leap day is inside. Do not advertise “150 weeks” as a synonym. It is a rounded slogan, and this page is for counting.
