Countries and cities on UTC+6
This offset cuts a long diagonal from the Bay of Bengal up through Central Asia into Siberia and out to the Indian Ocean: Bangladesh — Bangladesh Standard Time (BST). Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet.
Bhutan — Bhutan Time. Thimphu, Paro. Kyrgyzstan — Bishkek, Osh. Russia — Omsk Time. Omsk is the principal city on this offset. China — no official zone, but the far west of Xinjiang informally keeps Ürümqi time, two hours behind Beijing, which is UTC+6 in practice.
Antarctica — the Vostok research station. British Indian Ocean Territory — Diego Garcia. Dhaka is the largest city on the offset by a wide margin, and the one most often used as its reference in business hours planning.
Daylight saving on this offset
No country here shifts its clocks today. Bangladesh is the notable case: it ran daylight saving in 2009, moving to UTC+7 in June to ease pressure on the electricity supply, then abandoned the experiment at the end of that year. Russia stopped seasonal changes in 2014. Kyrgyzstan dropped them in 2005.
So UTC+6 is a fixed offset — but a moving target from anywhere that does change clocks. From Central Europe, Dhaka is five hours ahead in winter and four in summer. The best argument against daylight saving is having to explain, twice a year, that nothing changed on your end.
Working with UTC+6
A few things that save trouble: The abbreviation BST is ambiguous. It means Bangladesh Standard Time here and British Summer Time in the UK, and those are six hours apart. Write the offset or the city.
The overlap with Europe is narrow but real: a 09:00 start in Dhaka is early morning in Berlin, and a 17:00 finish in Dhaka is lunchtime there. Aim for the Dhaka afternoon. With the US East Coast there is effectively no shared working day. Someone stays up or gets up early; decide which, and alternate it.
Omsk and Dhaka show the same clock time but sit thousands of kilometres apart — same offset does not mean same season, weather or working calendar.
The Xinjiang exception
China officially runs on a single offset, UTC+8, across a country that spans five geographic time zones. In the far west that produces an awkward gap between the clock and the sun, and much of the local population keeps an unofficial time two hours behind — effectively UTC+6. Timetables, official offices and flights use Beijing time; daily life often does not. Anyone travelling there should confirm which clock a given time refers to.
Questions and answers
- Is Bangladesh always six hours ahead of UTC?
- Yes, currently. Apart from a single daylight saving experiment in 2009, Bangladesh has kept UTC+6 without seasonal change.
- What is the difference between UTC+6 and India?
- Thirty minutes. India is on UTC+5:30, so 12:00 in Dhaka is 11:30 in Kolkata.
- Does UTC+6 cover any part of Europe?
- No. The offset runs through Asia, Antarctica and the Indian Ocean only.
