GMT+6:30 Time Zone Countries list - UTC+6:30 Time Now

UTC+6:30 is six and a half hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. When UTC reads 08:00, clocks here read 14:30. Two places use it: Myanmar and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Neither observes daylight saving.

A small offset with two users

Half-hour zones are uncommon, and this one is among the least populated by territory count. Myanmar carries almost all of the people on it; the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, carry a few hundred.

Myanmar — Myanmar Time (MMT), used nationwide. Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Mawlamyine. Cocos (Keeling) Islands — West Island and Home Island, roughly 2,700 km northwest of the Australian mainland.

Myanmar's neighbours make the offset feel narrower than it is. Bangladesh and India to the west, Thailand and Laos to the east, and every one of those borders is a fractional or whole-hour step in a different direction.

Daylight saving

Neither Myanmar nor the Cocos Islands changes clocks seasonally. Australia observes daylight saving in several states, but its Indian Ocean territories do not participate, so Cocos stays on UTC+6:30 while Sydney and Adelaide shift beneath it. Myanmar has held its offset without seasonal adjustment.

The gap between Cocos and mainland Australian cities therefore changes twice a year — not because Cocos moved, but because the mainland did. Half-hour zones exist because geography does not care whether a number is round.

Getting the conversion right

The failure mode here is treating Myanmar as "about the same as Thailand." It is thirty minutes behind, and that half hour is enough to miss a flight or open a call late: From Bangkok, subtract thirty minutes. From Dhaka, add thirty. From Delhi, add one hour.

Convert through UTC when the route is unfamiliar — add 6:30 to UTC, rather than adjusting from a neighbour twice. Use the region identifier Asia/Yangon in software. Older systems may carry Asia/Rangoon; both resolve to the same offset, but the current name is the safer choice.

For the Cocos Islands, the identifier is Indian/Cocos. Do not assume it inherits an Australian mainland zone — it does not.

Where it sits among neighbours

Reading west to east across southern Asia, the offsets climb in uneven steps: Pakistan at +5, India and Sri Lanka at +5:30, Nepal at +5:45, Bangladesh and Bhutan at +6, Myanmar at +6:30, then Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos at +7. That is five changes in a stretch you can cross by air in a few hours, three of them fractional. It is one of the densest patches of time zone irregularity on the planet.

Questions and answers

What countries use UTC+6:30?
Myanmar uses it as national standard time. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian external territory, also use it.
Is Myanmar the same time as Thailand?
No. Thailand is on UTC+7, thirty minutes ahead of Myanmar. Noon in Yangon is 12:30 in Bangkok.
Do the Cocos Islands follow Australian daylight saving?
No. They remain on UTC+6:30 year-round, so their difference from mainland Australian cities changes when those cities shift.
