Khulna is a city in Khulna Division, in southwestern Bangladesh, on the tidal rivers of the Ganges delta. It does not keep a division hour or a port hour. Official time is Bangladesh Standard Time, six hours ahead of UTC, the same offset as Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rajshahi. If a gadget shows two Bangladeshi times, the gadget is wrong. The country is not.
Calendars typically store that offset as Asia/Dhaka even when the city is Khulna. The identifier names the national stamp, not a capital-only clock. If a form offers Dhaka or “Bangladesh,” that is the setting you want. Do not round the offset to UTC+5 or UTC+5:30 to match a neighbour. India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC. The half-hour gap is real. Myanmar’s civil time is UTC+6:30. Neither of those stamps is Khulna’s.
Bangladesh does not currently change this offset for summer. Visitors who pack a European or North American spring-forward habit will mis-set the first Monday alarm. The gap to those places will change when they jump. Khulna’s wall will not. Write UTC+6 on the invite. Do not write a seasonal pair as if this city kept two stamps.
Bangladesh Standard Time is built on the 90°E meridian. Khulna sits close to that line, so civil noon and solar noon are not far apart. That is still not a reason to treat 12:00 as a promise that the sun is due south to the second. Offices, river-port notices, and school bells follow the civil habit. If the outing is about actual daylight on the river, read Khulna’s sunrise here.
Khulna Division does not get a southwestern exception. A drive toward Jessore or toward the Sundarbans does not require a watch change. It requires travel time and a weather check. If a phone offers Kolkata after roaming, set it back: that is UTC+5:30, not this hour.
Civil time: Bangladesh Standard Time, UTC+6, all year. Computer name: Asia/Dhaka — a national label, not a hint to use Dhaka’s sunrise. Daylight saving: not observed here under current rules. Neighbour trap: India is UTC+5:30; do not “meet in the middle.”
Use that list when you set a calendar. The offset is the conversion number. Heat, tide, and monsoon only tell you which slot is practical. Six hours ahead of UTC is the stamp. The tide in the delta is not. Believe the wall and the river separately.
Sunrise and sunset here follow the date and Khulna’s location. They are not a division-wide average. Towns farther east see the sun a few minutes earlier. The Sundarbans are a landscape and a weather engine, not a time belt. Astronomical sunrise is the listed instant. Mangrove, haze, or rain can delay a visible rim.
Because Khulna is in the tropics, the swing in day length through the year is milder than in a northern capital. The short-day months still bring a later dawn on the civil clock. The long-day months still stretch the evening. The page recomputes the pair for the date. Do not copy a June pair into a December trip, and do not paste a Dhaka pair onto this southwestern square as if the minutes were identical.
The year is monsoon-shaped: a hot pre-monsoon, a wet season, and a milder dry season. Cyclones and river flooding can affect travel and power. They do not knock the city into UTC+5. A dark noon under a rain band is still noon on UTC+6. The weather line is the present temperature and sky for Khulna. It is not a Bay of Bengal warning by itself and not a Dhaka copy.
A standing call at 10:00 in Khulna stays at 10:00 in Khulna. A counterpart in London or New York may still move their clocks twice a year. If the Khulna slot suddenly feels early, their spring-forward is the usual culprit. Store the event as Asia/Dhaka or as UTC+6 so only their display moves. Do not write “BST” without spelling Bangladesh Standard Time: in other inboxes those three letters mean British Summer Time.
