Cities on Pacific Standard Time

During the northern winter, this offset carries one of the densest concentrations of business and technology anywhere. The list is long, so here are the anchors: California — Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Sacramento.

Washington and Oregon — Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Portland, Eugene. Nevada — Las Vegas and Reno. British Columbia — Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna. Northern Idaho — Coeur d'Alene and the panhandle, while the rest of the state runs on Mountain time.

All of these switch to UTC−7 as Pacific Daylight Time between the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.

Pitcairn, the offset that stays put

The Pitcairn Islands — Adamstown and the surrounding settlement, in the South Pacific — keep UTC−8 all year and do not observe daylight saving. For roughly eight months they read the same clock as Los Angeles; for the other four they are an hour behind it, without having touched anything.

Alaska joins the offset seasonally too: while the west coast is on daylight time at UTC−7, Anchorage sits at UTC−8. So in July, UTC−8 in North America means Alaska, not California.

Where the border keeps its own rules

Mexico ended nationwide daylight saving in 2022, but municipalities along the United States border were allowed to keep it so that cross-border commerce and shift work stay aligned. Tijuana and Mexicali therefore still move between UTC−8 and UTC−7 on the American dates, while most of Mexico does not switch at all.

Half the calendar invitations sent from the west coast say "PST" in June, when PST has been out of service since March. The abbreviation is a habit, not a measurement. That habit is worth breaking in writing. "Pacific time" is safe because it names a region and lets the reader's software resolve the offset. "PST" states a specific number, and for two-thirds of the year it states the wrong one. When precision matters — contracts, launches, incident windows — write the offset explicitly, or write the city and let the calendar do the conversion.
