Adamstown is the only settlement in the territory and the capital by default. It sits on Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific, and its clock — UTC−8 — is the clock of every inhabited square metre of the islands.

The offset places Pitcairn far west of the Americas in geography but on a North American Pacific-style number. This is an artefact of longitude and of the date line's position: the islands lie east of the line, so they share the Americas' side of the calendar despite sitting deep in Polynesian waters.

A territory of four islands

The Pitcairn group comprises four islands, only one of which is inhabited: Pitcairn — the only populated island, with Adamstown as its settlement. Henderson — uninhabited, and by far the largest of the four.

Ducie — an uninhabited atoll to the east. Oeno — an uninhabited atoll to the northwest. All four fall under the same time zone, though for three of them the point is academic.

Why there is no daylight saving

Pitcairn does not shift its clocks. With a population measured in dozens rather than thousands, and no commuting, no rush hour and no evening retail trade to extend, the entire rationale for daylight saving is absent. The offset stays at UTC−8 permanently.

The rhythm of life on the island is set by weather and shipping rather than by office hours. Supply vessels arrive on a schedule counted in weeks, and the arrival of a ship reorganises the day far more effectively than any clock change could.

Daylight saving exists to nudge millions of people towards the sun. On an island of a few dozen, everyone can simply look out the window.

Talking to Pitcairn

Contact with the outside world runs through satellite links, and the practical constraint is availability rather than arithmetic. Still, the offset matters for anyone arranging a call: Pitcairn is a long way behind the United Kingdom, which administers the territory — a British afternoon is a Pitcairn night-time hour.

New Zealand, the nearest large country by shipping route, is on the other side of the date line, so the calendar date differs as well as the hour. The western coast of the Americas is the closest match in offset terms, sharing UTC−8 when those regions are on standard time.

That last point creates the usual seasonal drift: North American Pacific cities move to daylight time and pull an hour ahead, while Pitcairn stays exactly where it was.
