Egypt uses Eastern European Time, UTC+2, as its standard offset across the whole country. Egypt has reintroduced daylight saving time, moving to UTC+3 during the summer months, so the offset in Cairo depends on the season.

A policy that has changed more than once

Egypt's daylight saving history is genuinely unsettled. The country has adopted the practice, abandoned it, and brought it back. Because of that, an old conversion table or a stale device setting is a real hazard when scheduling with Cairo — more so than for most countries.

The safe habit is to check the current offset against a live clock or an up-to-date system rather than a remembered number, particularly around the spring and autumn transition periods.

One zone from the Mediterranean to Aswan

Despite its size, Egypt operates on a single time zone. Alexandria on the north coast, Cairo, Luxor, Aswan far up the Nile and the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh all read the same clock. Sinai, the Western Desert and the Nile Delta are no exception.

The country's twenty-seven governorates are administrative divisions only; none of them keeps its own time. Egypt has spent centuries teaching the world how to divide the day. It reserves the right to keep revising the arrangement.

The week and the calendar

The offset is only half the scheduling problem. Egypt's rhythms differ from the European default in ways that matter: Friday is the main day of rest, and the weekend is generally Friday and Saturday. Sunday is a normal working day, which surprises visitors expecting a quiet start to the week.

During Ramadan, working hours in many organisations are shortened, and the month moves earlier each year against the Gregorian calendar. Public holidays follow both the Gregorian and Islamic calendars, so some fall on different dates each year.

Working across borders

Egypt's neighbours and partners line up like this: Libya and Sudan are close by on the map and worth checking individually, as offsets in the region are not uniform. Continental Europe on Central European Time is normally one hour behind Egyptian standard time — but with both sides potentially observing daylight saving on different dates, the gap can shift briefly.

Gulf states such as the UAE run ahead of Egypt and do not use daylight saving. The most reliable approach with any Egyptian counterpart is to agree a time in UTC and let each side translate it. That last point is not pedantry. When one side's rules change by decree with limited notice, UTC is the only number that both parties can verify independently.
