Current time in Red Sea, Egypt
Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate uses the national Egyptian time zone. Hurghada, Safaga, Quseir, Marsa Alam, and Ras Gharib share one official clock, although sunrise varies along the governorate’s extensive coastline.
The region runs for a considerable distance from north to south beside the Red Sea. Neither that length nor movement between its resorts and ports creates a civil-time change. The applicable national UTC offset can nevertheless vary under Egypt’s seasonal clock policy, making the current date important for overseas conversions.
Locations here face generally eastward toward the sea, so many coastal viewpoints offer an open direction for morning light. A calculated sunrise still assumes a standard horizon. Mountains, islands, haze, buildings, and the observer’s elevation can alter the moment when the sun becomes visible.
The Red Sea offers many places to watch dawn, but none comes with authority to reschedule it.
Coastal cities from north to south
Hurghada is the governorate’s capital and its best-known large urban center. Ras Gharib lies farther north. Safaga and Quseir are established coastal cities south of Hurghada, while Marsa Alam provides a useful reference for the governorate’s more southerly inhabited coast.
Ras Gharib is a northern Red Sea city near the Gulf of Suez. Hurghada is the administrative capital and a major resort center. Safaga is a port city south of Hurghada. Quseir lies farther down the Red Sea coast.
Marsa Alam is a southern coastal city and tourism center. The same time appears on clocks in all five places. Their sunrise and sunset entries are not interchangeable with perfect precision, however, because the cities differ in both latitude and longitude. Selecting the closest city is especially sensible in a governorate whose communities are spread along such a long coastal corridor.
Seasonal changes in day length are present but less extreme than at high latitudes. The direction of sunrise moves along the horizon during the year, and the interval between sunrise and sunset changes. Dawn begins before the listed sunrise; for diving departures, desert excursions, or photography, twilight may be as relevant as the formal event.
Sea conditions and weather should be checked independently. A solar table can say when the sun crosses the horizon, but it cannot show whether haze or cloud will obscure it or whether conditions are suitable for an activity.
Planning travel and calls
Domestic visitors do not need to change their watches when traveling from the Nile Valley to the Red Sea coast. Hotels, airports, marinas, and transport operators use Egyptian civil time. Confirming the exact departure details remains important because an itinerary may use local time without explicitly naming the zone.
Use the live Red Sea clock for appointments and departures. Pick the nearest coastal city for sunrise and sunset. Check twilight when the amount of usable light matters. Verify the date-specific difference before an international call.
If a device is locked to a foreign zone or a fixed UTC offset, it may show the wrong local time. Automatic zone detection is convenient, but the city and country displayed by the device should be reviewed after arrival.
Questions and answers
- Is Hurghada time different from Cairo time?
- No. Hurghada and Cairo observe the same Egyptian civil time.
- Do Marsa Alam and Ras Gharib have identical sunrise times?
- No. Their clocks agree, but their different positions produce different solar times.
- Is sunrise the same as first light?
- No. Morning twilight begins before sunrise and can provide usable natural light earlier.
