New Valley, Egypt
New Valley uses Egypt’s national civil time across its widely separated oases and desert settlements. The clocks agree everywhere, but long distances make the selected location important for an accurate sunrise time.

Current time in New Valley, Egypt
The displayed New Valley time applies in Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, and the governorate’s other inhabited areas. There is no separate oasis time zone, and travelling across the Western Desert does not officially change the clock.
Egypt’s standard time is Eastern European Time. Any daylight-saving adjustment is adopted nationally, so New Valley changes with Cairo and the rest of the country. The Africa/Cairo database zone is the correct technical setting for resolving the applicable rule on a given date.
In New Valley, the next oasis may be far away; fortunately, it is not in another time zone.
Oases and population centres
Kharga is the governorate’s capital and principal urban centre. Mut is the main town of the Dakhla Oasis area, while Farafra is the central settlement of its oasis. Other communities are distributed across a vast desert region rather than forming one continuous urban corridor.
Calling these the governorate’s main centres is more informative than treating “New Valley” as though it were a single city. Civil time can be stated regionally, but weather, twilight, and sunrise should be attached to an actual settlement or coordinates.
Use Kharga for a general governorate reference. Choose Mut for plans centred on Dakhla. Select Farafra for the Farafra Oasis area. Use exact coordinates for remote desert travel.
Sunrise across a vast desert region
New Valley covers substantial distances, so one sunrise listing cannot precisely describe every oasis. Locations farther east and west meet the Sun’s apparent daily path at different clock times, despite sharing the same Egyptian civil hour.
Latitude and season also affect dawn, sunrise, sunset, and the total span of daylight. A reliable result therefore needs both a date and a location. Reusing Kharga’s value for a remote site may be unsuitable when an exact departure or observation depends on first light.
Astronomical tables assume a standardized horizon, but desert topography can alter the visible event. Escarpments, hills, dunes, dust, and cloud may hide the Sun after its calculated rise. Twilight starts earlier, providing some natural illumination before the solar disk appears.
Questions and answers
- Do Kharga and Dakhla use the same time?
- Yes. They follow the same Egyptian civil-time rules.
- Can Kharga’s sunrise represent all of New Valley?
- Only as a broad reference. Widely separated locations require their own calculations for precision.
- What setting should a satellite device or phone use?
- Use Africa/Cairo or the equivalent Egypt setting, and verify that the device has current time-zone information.
