When last day of summer is asked as a single date, people are usually mixing three calendars. Meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere is June, July, and August, so the last day is 31 August. Astronomical summer in that hemisphere runs from the June solstice to the September equinox. In 2026 that equinox is 23 September at 00:05 UTC, which is still 22 September in much of the Americas. The last day of astronomical summer is the civil date that still contains hours before that moment.

In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons flip. Meteorological summer there is December, January, and February, so the last day is the last day of February (28 February in 2026, which is not a leap year). Astronomical summer there runs from the December solstice to the March equinox. “When last day of summer” without a hemisphere is unfinished.

School, Labor Day, and the feeling of an ending

A cultural last summer day is not a solstice. In the United States many people treat Labor Day weekend as the unofficial close of the season. In 2026 Labor Day is Monday 7 September. Beaches, pools, and town calendars often change after that Monday even though meteorological autumn already started on 1 September. A school term can end in June and start in August, which makes the “last summer day” a Sunday before classes, not an equinox.

How to answer someone who wants one number

Ask which list they are on. If they want a weather season, say 31 August in the north. If they want the sky, give the equinox and the timezone. If they want a holiday weekend, give Labor Day in the U.S. or the local equivalent. Write the year. The equinox moves by a day depending on the year and on where midnight falls.

Summer ends when your chosen calendar says it ends. The weather does not attend the meeting. If you are counting “days of summer left” in early September in the north, meteorological summer is already over. You are then counting toward the equinox or toward a personal last outing. Say which. A countdown that crosses 31 August without saying so is a mood, not a season.
