Bradbury published All Summer in a Day in 1954. The children live on a Venus of rain. Margot, who came from Earth, still knows what sunlight is. Her classmates do not. When the clouds thin for about an hour after seven years, they lock her away for the brightness and let her out after it has gone. The cruelty is timed. The hour will not return for another seven years in that plot.
That seven-year wait is fiction. The real planet is not a classroom with a booked gap in the cloud. Read the wait as a story clock. What the fiction is doing on a holiday page is naming a season that will not sit still on a grid: summer crushed until it fits inside a day, and then not even a full day of light.

A title on a holiday page
The title borrows the season-word and then withholds the season. On that Venus there is no reliable June. Summer is a visit. Earth’s last day still has dates. You can keep both readings if you do not mix their clocks. Readers who came for the story want that hour. Readers who came to close a season should write 31 August or the equinox and stop expecting a feast-day name.
All day, in ordinary speech, means the whole civil date. The plot’s sunlight is not a full waking stretch. The joke in the title is that “all summer” has been folded into a day that is not even a full day of light. A holiday page can hold that joke without inventing a civic close of the banks. There is no All Summer in a Day on a federal table. There is a short story, and there is a last day of summer you can actually circle.
Bradbury filed a whole season under one hour. Earth still wants a last day, then argues about which clock owns the word “last.”
