How many weeks are in summer depends on which summer you are counting. The weather office’s summer is three named months. The sky’s summer is solstice to equinox. A school’s summer is a break whose first Monday and last Friday were chosen in a meeting.

Northern meteorological summer is June (30 days), July (31), and August (31). That is 92 days every year, leap or not, because February is not in the pile. 92 days is 13 weeks and 1 day. It is not 13 weeks exactly, and it is not 12.

Thirteen weeks and a leftover day

People like a clean “13 weeks of summer.” The leftover day is the calendar refusing to be tidy. If you start the count on 1 June, 13 full weeks later is 31 August minus one day: you still have 31 August sitting there. Include 31 August and you have that extra date.

Astronomical summer in the north begins at the June solstice and ends at the September equinox. In 2026 the June solstice is 21 June and the September equinox is 23 September. That stretch is a little more than thirteen weeks. It is not June–August, and it does not care that August has 31 days.

School breaks are not the season

How many weeks of summer a child gets off is a local figure. Some districts start the break in May and return in August. Some run into September. None of those decisions moves the solstice. A “ten-week summer” on a school letter is a roster. It is not a claim that the Sun agreed.

Shops that sell “summer” from a display date are using a merchandising season. That season can start in April. April is not meteorological summer in the north. If you needed the week-count for weather, ignore the display. If you needed it for a sale, ignore the solstice.

From Thursday 3 September 2026, northern meteorological summer is already over: 31 August has passed. Astronomical summer in the north is still running until the September equinox. That is why a week in early September can feel like summer in the air and like autumn on one kind of chart. Both charts are doing their jobs. They are not the same job.

Summer is three months, or a solstice, or a school gate. Divide the wrong one by seven and you will get a very confident wrong number.
