There is no global clock reading called golden hour. The morning session starts when the sun has just risen. The evening session starts when the sun is about to set. Both last while the sun is low enough that the light travels a long path through the air, looks warmer, and throws longer shadows.

What time is the golden hour today depends on today’s sunrise and sunset where you stand. At a mid-latitude place in June the evening session can begin late on the clock. In December it can begin in the afternoon. The name “hour” is a habit. The useful light can be shorter or longer than sixty minutes as the season and the latitude change.

Tomorrow’s golden hour is not copied from today’s clock. It follows tomorrow’s sunrise and sunset. If you travel east or west, the civil clock changes and so does the solar time. If you travel north or south, the length of the day changes too. Ask the question with a place and a date, or the answer is only a method.

Photographers treat two windows: after sunrise and before sunset. The evening window is the one people usually mean when they say they will “shoot at golden hour.” The morning window is the same kind of light with quieter streets. Neither is noon. Noon is when the sun is highest and the shadows are shortest.

Clock time versus the sun

A watch names civil time in a time zone. Golden hour names a lighting condition. 18:00 can be golden in one city in March and fully dark in another city in December. Writing “golden hour at 6 pm” without a place is a caption, not a plan.

Find sunrise and sunset for your location on the date you care about. The morning golden hour is the period just after sunrise. The evening golden hour is the period just before sunset. If you need a reminder, set an alarm to a clock time you derived from those solar times, not to the words “golden hour.”

Morning window: just after local sunrise. Evening window: just before local sunset. Both move through the year as the length of the day changes. Noon is not golden hour, however pretty the weather is.

Cloud, haze, and a skyline of buildings can cut the session short or tint it. The sun can be at the right height behind a wall of weather. The rule of thumb still starts from sunrise and sunset. The picture then tells you whether the light arrived.

Golden hour is named like a clock appointment. It is actually a lighting condition that refuses to sit at 18:00 everywhere. If you are planning a portrait, arrive before the window, not at the minute you think it starts. The useful light is already fading when the sun is on the horizon. Pack up after the colour goes, not after a round number on the watch.
