Current time in Honiara
Solomon Islands runs on UTC+11 all year, with no daylight saving. Honiara, on Guadalcanal, sets the time for the whole archipelago — every province, from the Shortlands to the far eastern islands, shares that one offset.
Nearly a thousand islands, one offset
The country spreads across a long chain in the southwestern Pacific, and geographically it is wide enough that a purist could argue for more than one zone. In practice it uses a single one. That decision keeps domestic aviation, shipping and radio schedules coherent across a territory where inter-island travel is a large part of ordinary life.
The IANA identifier is Pacific/Guadalcanal, taken from the island the capital sits on rather than from Honiara itself. Anyone configuring software for the country should use that string.
Ahead of almost everyone
UTC+11 puts Solomon Islands among the first places to reach any given date. For anyone working with the country from Europe or the Americas, this is the dominant practical fact — the working day in Honiara is largely over before Europe starts and has not begun when the Americas finish.
One hour ahead of Brisbane, which stays on UTC+10 year-round. Level with Sydney and Melbourne in the southern summer, when they move to UTC+11, and an hour ahead of them the rest of the year. Two hours behind New Zealand in the southern summer, one hour behind otherwise.
Same clock as Vanuatu and New Caledonia, the nearest neighbours in the region. Eleven hours ahead of UTC, which in practice means roughly a full day's displacement from Western Europe's working hours.
In Honiara, a colleague in London is not late for the morning meeting — they are yesterday.
Why there is no daylight saving
Solomon Islands lies in the tropics, a few degrees south of the equator. Day length barely varies through the year: there is no dark winter afternoon to rescue and no long summer evening to extend. Shifting the clock would produce almost no change in usable daylight while adding confusion to flight schedules and international coordination. The country has stayed on a fixed offset.
The consequence is that the difference between Honiara and its Australian and New Zealand neighbours changes twice a year — because they move, not because Solomon Islands does. If you keep a recurring call with Sydney, expect the local time of that call to shift with the Australian changeover.
Provinces, distance and daylight
The country is divided into provinces plus the capital territory. All keep the same clock, but the sun does not treat them identically. The western islands see sunrise and sunset later on the clock than the eastern ones, since the archipelago stretches a considerable distance east to west. It is a modest difference — nothing like a zone boundary — but it is enough that "sunset" is not a single national moment.
Some practical guidance: Write times as "09:00 (UTC+11)". The abbreviation SBT is used but not widely recognised outside the region. When booking domestic flights, treat all published times as local — there is no zone change en route.
For software, use Pacific/Guadalcanal rather than a fixed offset, so historical timestamps convert correctly. When arranging a call with Europe, the workable window is early morning Europe against evening Honiara, or vice versa. There is no comfortable overlap in the middle of both days.
Questions and answers
- Does Solomon Islands use daylight saving time?
- No. The offset is UTC+11 for the entire year, with no seasonal change.
- How many time zones does the country have?
- One. Despite covering a wide stretch of ocean, all provinces use the same time as Honiara.
- Is Honiara the same time as Sydney?
- Only during Australian daylight saving, when Sydney is also on UTC+11. For the rest of the year Honiara is one hour ahead.
