These places are useful reference points, but the province also contains many smaller coastal and island settlements.

Population size is only one measure of local importance. A port, airfield, clinic, market, or government office can make a modest settlement the practical hub for a wide surrounding area. Travellers should identify both the named town and the island before relying on a schedule.

Sunrise on the western islands

Western Province sees sunrise later by solar position than the eastern provinces, since all of Solomon Islands uses one civil-time offset. The difference is geographical rather than administrative: no clock boundary separates Gizo from the rest of the country.

Sunrise times are not interchangeable across the province. Gizo, Munda, Noro, and remote islands have different longitudes and local horizons. Hills, vegetation, cloud cover, and nearby islands may also affect the moment when the sun itself becomes visible.

Day length remains comparatively steady in this tropical setting, though sunrise and sunset still move through the year.
