Beijing and Hong Kong show exactly the same time. China keeps one national offset, UTC+8, from the far west to the east coast, and Hong Kong's own zone — identifier Asia/Hong_Kong — sits on the same offset. Whether a schedule says Beijing time or Hong Kong time, the hour on the clock is identical.

One offset from the border to the mainland

The practical value of this alignment is hard to overstate for a city built on trade and finance. Hong Kong, Shenzhen just across the boundary, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing all open and close their working day on the same clock. Cross-boundary travel by train or road involves no adjustment at all.

Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the outlying islands all keep one time. Mainland China is on the same offset, UTC+8, with no border difference. Macau, Taipei, Singapore, Manila and Perth also sit at UTC+8. The offset does not change at any point in the year.

Daylight saving, and why it ended

Hong Kong does not observe daylight saving time today. Its clocks stay at UTC+8 in every month. The territory sits at a subtropical latitude where the difference in daylight between summer and winter, while noticeable, is far smaller than in the temperate north — and the case for shifting an hour is correspondingly weaker.

A financial centre values a clock that never argues with itself; in Hong Kong, the only thing that opens and closes on schedule twice a year is the typhoon season.

Working across the world from UTC+8

Hong Kong's position on the clock puts it in a useful place for global business. The morning here overlaps with the last part of the North American afternoon on the previous calendar day, and the afternoon here reaches into the European morning. That makes a Hong Kong working day a natural bridge between the two, and it is one reason the city functions as a hub for regional finance and logistics.

Use Asia/Hong_Kong in calendar and server settings; it is stable and needs no seasonal rules. European partners are seven or eight hours behind depending on their summer time. North American partners are on the previous calendar day for most of the Hong Kong working day — always state the date.

Markets and offices follow local Hong Kong hours; public holidays here differ from mainland ones, so check the calendar as well as the clock.
