Tung Chung, Discovery Bay and island communities

Islands District includes numerous islands and several distinct population centers. Tung Chung on Lantau Island is a major town, while Discovery Bay is another substantial residential community. Mui Wo, Tai O and Cheung Chau are also well-known local places.

These settlements have different landscapes and transport connections, but not different clocks. A ferry departure from Cheung Chau and an arrival at a destination elsewhere in Hong Kong are both scheduled in HKT.

“Largest cities” is not a natural classification for this district. Some places are new towns, some are residential developments, and others are traditional island settlements. Naming principal communities is more accurate than inventing a common ranking across categories.

Island horizons, sunrise and sunset

Solar times should be calculated for the island or settlement concerned. Tung Chung, Cheung Chau and Tai O occupy different positions, so their sunrise and sunset readings can differ slightly on the same date.

An open sea view may reveal the horizon clearly, but hills on Lantau and nearby islands can block the Sun from particular valleys or shores. The published sunrise is based on an astronomical model, not a simulation of every local ridge.

Choose the correct island and nearest settlement. Verify the date before planning a ferry, walk or photograph. Interpret the result in HKT, which remains UTC+8. Check twilight if you need an estimate of available light.

Sunrise marks a formal solar event rather than the first hint of morning brightness. Dawn occurs earlier, and sunset is followed by dusk. Weather changes what can be seen, while seasonal solar movement changes the calculated times themselves.
