Boston is a city in Massachusetts, in the United States, on Massachusetts Bay at the mouth of the Charles, in New England. It does not keep a harbour hour, a college hour, or a municipal stamp of its own. Official clocks follow Eastern Time, the same seasonal pair as Worcester, New York, and Washington. Computers usually store that pair as America/New_York. The identifier is a filing convention. It does not put a Boston meeting in Manhattan.
Clocks here jump forward one hour on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 Eastern Standard Time toward 03:00 Eastern Daylight Time, and back one hour on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 EDT toward 01:00 EST. For 2026 those U.S. Sundays are 8 March and 1 November. The spring jump skips 02:00. The autumn jump repeats 01:00. A roster that only says “2 a.m.” on those nights is incomplete.
This page is Massachusetts, not Boston in Lincolnshire. The English namesake keeps a European clock that jumps on the Union’s weekends. Mixing the two places is how people convert against the wrong ocean. Write Massachusetts or Eastern Time on the invite if the mail might leave New England.
Massachusetts does not split its civil hour. Springfield, Worcester, and Boston share Eastern Time. What they do not share is the sun. Boston sits east of the 75°W meridian that Eastern Time is built on, so solar noon arrives before 12:00 on the wall. A noon lunch is still a diary habit. The sun’s highest point over the harbour comes earlier than that label. Do not “correct” a calendar invite toward a shadow on the Common.
People still say “EST” in July. That abbreviation is wrong while daylight saving is in force. EST means the standard offset. EDT means the summer offset. “Eastern Time” covers both if the date is attached. If the date is not attached, say UTC−5 or UTC−4, or let the zone file do the work.
Winter stamp: EST, UTC−5. Daylight stamp: EDT, UTC−4, on the U.S. calendar named above. Computer name: America/New_York — an Eastern Time file, not a hint to use New York’s sunrise. Namesake: Boston, Lincolnshire, is another clock.
Sun and weather: these coordinates, not a centroid of the Eastern seaboard. A standing Monday call at 09:00 in Boston stays at 09:00 on the wall only if you stored it in the zone file. If you stored it as “09:00 UTC−5” and then March arrives, you have booked the hour you did not mean. Someone in a country that does not jump often assumes your 09:00 is still five hours behind UTC in July. It is not. It is four.
A harbour clock that “always shows Eastern Time” and a clock that never jumps are not the same device. Name the date, or name EST or EDT.
Boston sits far enough north that day length changes a great deal between December and June. Late summer evenings are daylight, not proof that “the clocks are still wrong.” Dark winter afternoons are the tilt of the Earth plus this latitude. After the November fall-back, sunset lands on an earlier civil minute; that is the label moving, on top of an already short day. The sun table on this page tracks the date. A June sunset pasted into January is fiction. Do not borrow Miami’s pair because both places are “Eastern.” They do not share a latitude or a first gleam.
Geometry lists the instant the upper limb meets a flat horizon. Downtown towers, a harbour fog, and a nor’easter overcast can hide the disk from a street that table still calls “after sunrise.” Grey walking light already exists in twilight. Keep the table for the instant; keep the window for a visible rim.
New England weather is its own column: a real winter, a real summer, humid air, and Atlantic storms. Snow can hide dawn. Heat can make late afternoon look like evening. A white-out at noon is still noon Eastern Time. Dress from the weather line. Schedule from the civil clock. Watch the sun table if the outing is about daylight.
For mixed readers, write “09:00 Boston (EDT)” or “09:00 Boston (EST)” according to the season, or write America/New_York and let the calendar choose. “East Coast time” is honest for the hour and still too vague for sunrise.
