What time is it in New York City

New York City keeps Eastern Time: EST at UTC−5 in winter and EDT at UTC−4 in summer. The five boroughs share that hour. This page shows the live civil clock. The IANA name is America/New_York. Standard time is Eastern Standard Time. Daylight time is Eastern Daylight Time. The United States currently springs forward on the second Sunday in March and falls back on the first Sunday in November. In 2026 those dates are 8 March and 1 November. The change is not a city ordinance. It is the Eastern Time rule used across the state and along much of the seaboard.

Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island post the same numerals. Newark and Jersey City, across the Hudson, do too. Do not invent a borough offset. Do invent travel time. Convert other cities through the current Eastern offset, not through the phrase “New York time” remembered from a January trip.

Eastern Time across the five boroughs

The spring-forward is at 02:00 EST, which becomes 03:00 EDT. The fall-back is at 02:00 EDT, which becomes 01:00 EST. Overnight radio, hospital charts, and subway work windows have to name the repeated or skipped hour on those nights. Ordinary meetings should be booked in named offsets: “15:00 EDT” is clearer than “3 p.m. New York” in the weeks around a change.

London’s change dates do not match. In 2026 Britain moves on 29 March and 25 October; New York City moves on 8 March and 1 November. That leaves stretches when the gap is four hours and stretches when it is five, plus a week in late October when London has fallen back and New York has not. Recompute. Do not reuse a July gap in November.

Winter: EST, UTC−5. Summer: EDT, UTC−4. IANA: America/New_York, all five boroughs. US DST: second Sunday in March forward, first Sunday in November back. The boroughs will argue about the restaurant. They will not argue about which hour it is.

Sunrise over the harbor

New York City’s latitude is temperate-north, in a similar band to Shenyang’s but with a coastal horizon and a different climate. June days are long. December days are short. Harbor sunrise and Hudson sunset on this page use New York City’s coordinates. A sunrise over the harbor and a sunset up the Hudson are the same solar day seen from two directions, not two timezones.

Skyscrapers steal the disk from a given street minutes early. That is a skyline, not EDT. The astronomical pair assumes a clear horizon. If you need light on a particular corner, look at the street, then at the pair, then at the weather. DST will have already shifted the clock labels in March; it will not have moved the building.

After the November fall-back, sunset times on the clock jump later while the actual dusk keeps arriving earlier each day toward December. After the March spring-forward, sunset labels jump earlier while the season is already lengthening. People blame the clock for the dark. The dark is the solstice. The clock only renamed it.

Four-season weather on Eastern Time

The city has four ordinary temperate seasons: a cold winter, a warm humid summer, and transitional springs and autumns. Nor’easters, heat, and humidity are weather. They do not decide EST versus EDT. A mild February does not cancel standard time. A cool August does not cancel daylight time.

London rain is not this forecast. Johannesburg’s Highveld storm is not this forecast. Use the weather on this page for New York City. When you call China, the other side stays on UTC+8; your side is the one that will jump in March and November. Write the meeting in both named zones on the day, especially in the weeks when London and New York are out of step with each other.
