Postal codes come from the free GeoNames dataset. Where a code is listed with a distance, it belongs to a nearby settlement — GeoNames spells that name differently from ours.
Teni — often spelled Theni in English — is a city in Tamil Nadu, at the foot of the Western Ghats, not on the Bay of Bengal. It does not run on a district hour, a hill hour, or a Tamil-only stamp. India keeps a single civil offset: five and a half hours ahead of UTC. A stated time in Teni is the same numerals as in Chennai, Madurai, or Delhi. The sun is not in the same place in the sky. The wall clock is.
Calendars typically store that offset as Asia/Kolkata even when the city is Teni. The identifier names IST, not a West Bengal-only stamp. If a form offers “India” or “IST,” that is the setting you want. Do not round the half hour to UTC+5 or UTC+6 to make a foreign spreadsheet tidier. The half hour is the law.
Teni sits west of the meridian IST is built on. Daylight therefore arrives later by the wall clock than it does in the east of the country. A 07:00 IST start here can still look like the end of night in the cooler months, while the same 07:00 on the Hooghly is already morning. Print IST on the invitation anyway. If daylight itself is the point of the outing, read Teni’s sunrise on this page.
Tamil Nadu does not get a southern exception. Railways, exams, and office hours are written in IST unless a notice says otherwise. A drive toward Madurai or over the hills toward Kerala does not require a watch change on the Indian side. It requires the journey, not a new offset. Sri Lanka, across the water from the Tamil Nadu coast, keeps its own rules. Convert that separately. If a phone offers a neighbouring country’s offset after roaming, set it back.
Civil time: IST, UTC+5:30, all year. Computer name: Asia/Kolkata — an IST label, not a hint to use Kolkata’s sunrise. Daylight saving: not observed in India. Sun and weather: Teni’s coordinates, not a Chennai pin and not a hill-station paste.
International conversions must carry the date as well as the hour. Late evening here can still be the previous working day in the Americas. Early morning here can already be afternoon farther east. The half-hour offset also surprises people who convert in whole hours and then wonder why they are thirty minutes adrift.
Sunrise and sunset on this page are calculated for Teni on the selected date. They are not a statewide average for Tamil Nadu. Hills to the west can hide the disk from a street that geometry still calls “after sunrise.” Haze and monsoon cloud can do the same. Astronomical sunrise assumes an ideal horizon. A foothill town is not that horizon.
Day length still follows the season: longer around the June solstice, shorter around the December solstice. The swing is milder than in the far north of India and still real. Do not copy a January dawn into a July plan. The clock never jumped. The light did.
The year here is a tropical wet-and-dry year shaped by the monsoon. Heat before the rains can make midday a poor time to be on the street, even while offices are in full swing on IST. Once the rains arrive, downpours and slower roads matter more than the nominal hour on a timetable. Indoor schedules still follow IST. Outdoor plans should follow heat, rain, and light together. The weather reading is present conditions over Teni, not a Western Ghats climate essay and not a promise about tomorrow afternoon.
The Ghats can delay the first gleam. They cannot delay IST. Hills are geography. The half-hour is law. A partner in Berlin or New York may still jump their clocks. Teni will not. When a recurring call drifts, check the other calendar before you rewrite this side. Write “09:00 Teni (UTC+5:30)” so IST is not filed as a Chennai sunrise that does not belong to this foothill.
