Madurai is on India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, through every month. The live clock is civil time in Tamil Nadu. Sunrise, sunset, and weather follow this Vaigai-river city, not Chennai’s horizon.

What time is it in Madurai is the legal hour in southern Tamil Nadu, the same national stamp used in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. There is no separate “Madurai time” on the civil clock. The IANA name is Asia/Kolkata. The tag is a library habit. It does not put this temple city on the Hooghly. A laptop set to Kolkata and a wall clock near the Vaigai should agree on the minute.
The half hour is the usual conversion error. People who live on whole-hour zones round IST to +5 or +6 and then wonder why the other side is always thirty minutes off. Five hours thirty minutes ahead of UTC is the number. If your meeting math used a round offset, redo it. The live pair of clocks is cheaper than an apology, and cheaper than assuming “south India” keeps a different stamp from the north. It does not.
India does not use daylight saving. A remembered gap to London or New York is not a law. Those places move. Madurai does not. When their walls jump, the difference between you and them changes even though nothing on the Vaigai moved. Convert through UTC+5:30, or through two live clocks, on the day of the call. Last night’s capture is only an image.
UTC+5:30 is built on 82°30′E. Madurai sits west of that line, so solar noon arrives after 12:00 IST. Temple schedules, school bells, and bus depots run on the civil habit. Photographers in the old city may care about the sun’s peak. Both clocks can be right at once. Do not “correct” an invite toward the disk. Correct it toward IST.
Tamil Nadu does not get a state offset. Chennai, Coimbatore, and a neighbourhood in Madurai share the same legal hour. A night shift at a workshop is a work rule on IST, not a Tamil municipal zone. Print 18:00 IST, not “after the evening puja,” if someone overseas has to match a door. Devotional time and civil time can share a city without sharing a conversion formula.
Label the meeting IST or UTC+5:30. Rounding to a whole hour is the error. Treat Chennai as the same hour, not the same sunrise over the Vaigai. Leave foreign DST footnotes on their side of the invite.
Use a live Madurai clock for “now”; use this sun table for light. That order keeps a transcontinental call honest. The half hour is not decorative. It is the difference between “they are in the meeting” and “they have not joined yet.”
Madurai lies much closer to the equator than Nashik or Delhi, so the length of day changes less through the year. You will not see the collapsed winter afternoons of a high-latitude city. You will still see a real difference between the long-day months and the short-day months. This page recalculates sunrise and sunset for the chosen date. A June pair used in December is still the wrong season, even when the swing looks modest on paper.
The listed sunrise is the upper edge against an ideal horizon. Heat haze, monsoon cloud, and a street of tall gopurams can hide the disk without moving that minute. Read the sun block for geometry and the weather line for visibility. Twilight precedes the listed sunrise; you can walk before the disk appears.
Dropping the thirty minutes does not get you close enough to Madurai. It gets you a different country’s hour with a Tamil city pasted on top. Madurai’s year is tropical, with a hot stretch and wetter months when monsoon rain arrives. A climate outline is not the heat on this street now. The weather line is the present temperature and sky for this city, not a Chennai coastal copy and not a hill-station copy from the Western Ghats. A dark noon under a downpour is still noon IST. Take clothing from the weather and the hour from IST. Watch the sun table if the outing needed remaining daylight.
Flying out, hold IST until takeoff, then change the phone. Flying in, switch to IST on the ground. Madurai’s airport is already Tamil Nadu, already IST. Say 5:00 p.m. IST. “It feels later by the river” is not a timestamp.
