Mumbai uses India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, all year. The IANA zone is Asia/Kolkata. India does not change clocks for summer. Sunrise and weather here use that offset. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, on the Arabian Sea. The whole country keeps one civil time, so this city is not half an hour from Pune or Delhi on the clock. It is half an hour from Pakistan, and two and a half hours from China Standard Time.
The half hour is the detail people drop. A meeting with Lahore or Karachi is not “the same time.” It is thirty minutes apart. A meeting with Dubai is ninety minutes. Write the offset, not only the city nickname “IST,” which can also mean Irish Standard Time.
India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC. Phones and servers should store Asia/Kolkata even when the screen says Mumbai. There is no Asia/Mumbai zone in ordinary civil use. The municipal clock, the suburban trains, and the airport all follow the national hour.
Because Mumbai is on the west coast, solar noon is not identical to solar noon in Kolkata, yet both print the same legal time. Use the sun table on this page for this longitude. A copied Kolkata sunrise will be wrong for a Marine Drive jog, even though both cities share IST.
Mumbai to UTC: subtract five hours thirty minutes. Mumbai to Pakistan Standard Time: subtract thirty minutes. Mumbai to China Standard Time: add two hours thirty minutes. Mumbai to São Paulo: subtract eight hours thirty minutes and watch the date.
Mumbai to Mexico City: subtract eleven hours thirty minutes. Date-line mistakes happen on late-night calls to the Americas. If you mean Tuesday in Mumbai, say whether that is still Monday in Mexico City. The half hour does not cause that error; the long gap across the Pacific does. The half hour only makes sloppy rounding worse. Monsoon rain can flood a street. It cannot add a daylight-saving hour to India.
Mumbai has a tropical monsoon climate. The southwest monsoon dominates the wet months, roughly from early summer into autumn: heavy rain, low cloud, and humid air off the sea. The rest of the year is drier, still warm, with clearer mornings in the cooler months. There are not four temperate seasons of the Tianjin kind.
The city sits at a low latitude, so the length of day changes less through the year than it does in northern China or in Punjab. You still should not reuse a June sunrise in December. The table on this page is computed for this date and this coast.
Cloud is the main liar. In the monsoon the listed sunrise may happen behind rain. In the drier months haze can dull the horizon. Astronomical dawn is not the same as the moment you see a disc over the water. If you need light on the street, look at both the sun times and the forecast.
Pack for humidity and rain in the wet season, not for a mild “winter” you remember from somewhere else. The clock at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will show IST. The air outside will tell you whether that hour is a downpour or a clear morning.
