What time is it in Edmonton
Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, in Canada, on the North Saskatchewan River. It does not keep a capital-only hour, a river hour, or a municipal stamp of its own. Official clocks follow Mountain Time, the same family of offsets as Calgary: Mountain Standard Time in the colder months and Mountain Daylight Time once Alberta springs forward. Computers usually store that pair as America/Edmonton. The label names a provincial zone file. It does not move an Edmonton sitting onto the Bow.
Clocks here jump forward one hour on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 MST toward 03:00 MDT, and back one hour on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 MDT toward 01:00 MST. For 2026 the dates are 8 March and 1 November. The spring night skips 02:00. The autumn night sees 01:00 twice. Overnight jobs have to name the occurrence.
Use the running display; a river-valley photograph is already late. Convert through America/Edmonton, or through two live clocks. A remembered “Edmonton is seven hours behind UTC” is only true while MST is in force. During MDT it is six. Recheck in March and November, when one side of a pair may have jumped and the other may not.
Alberta’s capital between Pacific Time and a neighbour that often stays put
Alberta is one civil zone. A drive to Calgary or to Fort McMurray does not change the watch. It changes the wind and the skyline. British Columbia to the west keeps Pacific Time, which is one hour behind Edmonton in both winter and summer as long as both sides change on the same weekend. Saskatchewan to the east generally stays on Central Standard Time all year under current rules, so the gap to Regina is not a simple “one province over” story through the seasons. Convert through named zones.
Canada is not one zone. Ontario’s capital is on Eastern Time. This capital is not. If a counterpart said “the capital,” ask which one. “9 a.m. Mountain Time in Edmonton” is a time. “9 a.m. Canada” is not.
Winter: MST, UTC−7. Summer: MDT, UTC−6. Computer name: America/Edmonton — Alberta civil time, including the capital. West: Pacific Time in British Columbia, usually one hour behind. Sun and weather: Edmonton’s coordinates, not a Calgary foothills dawn and not a prairie centroid.
Mountain Time is built on the 105°W meridian. Edmonton sits west of that line, so solar noon arrives after 12:00 on the wall. A 12:00 lunch is Alberta civil time, not solar noon over the North Saskatchewan. The disk’s peak over the river valley is a later minute. The valley banks can hide the evening sun from a street that geometry still calls “before sunset.” That is a skyline, not a second law.
A June evening on the North Saskatchewan can look endless. That is latitude. Alberta only moved the labels in March.
Northern prairie light on a jumping clock
Edmonton sits well north of Calgary, so winter afternoons are short and summer evenings run late. A 17:00 exit from an office is night in one month and broad daylight in another. The long summer evening is daylight, not a third Alberta zone. Polar day belongs farther north. Edmonton has a stretched June dusk. It does not lose the sun for weeks. Look at the selected date before you pack the evening.
Once MDT begins, the listed rising sits later on the wall even though the sun did not sleep in. After the November fall-back, sunset sits earlier, on top of an already short northern day. This page’s sun block follows the selected date and whichever Mountain offset is then in force. Dawn in the table assumes a flat horizon. Ice haze, low cloud, and the river valley’s banks can hide the disk. First gleam from the east is a window fact.
Prairie weather is its own column. Cold winters and a real summer can change the coat without touching the offset. A dark noon in a snow squall is still noon. The present sky here is not a Calgary chinook copy, and not a reason to write “when it warms up” on a timestamp. Neither heating season nor open-window season reprints MST or MDT.
Write “09:00 Edmonton (MST)” or “09:00 Edmonton (MDT)” according to the season, or write America/Edmonton and let the calendar choose. “Alberta time” is honest only if nobody pastes a Saskatchewan year-round rule onto it. Partners in Japan or China will not jump with Edmonton. The start of MDT widens or shrinks those gaps by one hour while they stand still. Update a weekly call with a non-jumping city on Alberta’s change dates, not on theirs.
