What time is it in Calgary

Calgary is a city in Alberta, in Canada, on the Bow and Elbow rivers where the prairie meets the foothills of the Rockies. It does not keep a foothills hour, a Stampede hour, or a municipal stamp of its own. Official clocks follow Mountain Time, the same family of offsets as Edmonton: Mountain Standard Time in the colder months and Mountain Daylight Time once Alberta springs forward. Computers usually store that pair as America/Edmonton. The label names a provincial zone file. It does not move a Calgary meeting onto the North Saskatchewan.

Clocks here jump forward one hour on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 MST toward 03:00 MDT, and back one hour on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 MDT toward 01:00 MST. In 2026 that is Sunday 8 March and Sunday 1 November, the same civil weekends as most of the United States. March drops 02:00 from the night. November plays 01:00 twice. Night buses and automated jobs have to say which occurrence they mean.

Use the running display; a tower photograph is already late. Convert through America/Edmonton, or through two clocks you can see updating. Do not convert through a remembered gap from a January when Calgary was on standard time and Vancouver had already jumped — they usually jump together, and the exceptions are what ruin a calendar.

Mountain Time between two other Canadian stamps

Alberta is one civil zone. A drive to Edmonton or to Banff does not change the watch. It changes the wind and the skyline. British Columbia to the west keeps Pacific Time, which is one hour behind Calgary in both winter and summer as long as both sides change on the same weekend. Saskatchewan to the east keeps a year-round Central Standard offset under current rules, so the gap to Regina is not a simple “one province over” story. Convert through named zones.

Winter: MST, UTC−7. Summer: MDT, UTC−6. Computer name: America/Edmonton — Alberta civil time, including Calgary. West: Pacific Time in British Columbia, usually one hour behind. Sun and weather: Calgary’s coordinates, not a Banff ridge dawn and not an Edmonton paste.

Mountain Time is built on the 105°W meridian. Calgary sits west of that line, so solar noon arrives after 12:00 on the wall. A 12:00 lunch is Alberta civil time, not solar noon over the Bow. The disk’s peak over the prairie is a later minute. The Rockies to the west can hide the evening sun from a street that geometry still calls “before sunset.” That is a skyline, not a second law.

A chinook can feel like April in January. The law still knows which Sunday the clocks jump.

Foothills light and chinook weather

Sunrise and sunset on this page are calculated for Calgary’s coordinates on the chosen date. They are not an Alberta proclamation. The city sits well north of Dallas, so winter afternoons are short and summer evenings run late. The swing is large enough that a 17:00 exit from an office is night in one month and broad daylight in another. The long summer evening is daylight, not a third Alberta zone. Look at the selected date before you pack the evening. A June sunset will not help a December arrival.

The rising in the table is the geometric minute against a flat horizon. Chinook cloud, ice haze, and the city’s own buildings can hide the disk. First gleam from the east is a window fact. Keep the table for that calculated instant.

Foothills weather is its own column. Cold winters, warm spells when a chinook wind comes over the mountains, and a relatively dry prairie year can change the coat without touching the offset. A dark noon in a snow squall is still noon. A shirt-sleeve January afternoon is still Mountain Time. The weather line is Calgary’s present temperature and sky. It is not a mountain avalanche bulletin and not a reason to write “when it warms up” on a timestamp.

For mixed readers, write “09:00 Calgary (MST)” or “09:00 Calgary (MDT)” according to the season, or write America/Edmonton and let the calendar choose. “Mountain Time” is honest for this city. “Alberta time” is honest too, as long as nobody pastes a Saskatchewan rule onto it. Partners in Japan or China will not jump with Calgary. The start of MDT widens or shrinks those gaps by one hour while they stand still.
