Texas, United States
Most of Texas follows Central Time, but El Paso and Hudspeth counties in far western Texas use Mountain Time. The correct local hour depends on whether the location lies in that western exception.

Current time in Texas, United States
Central Time governs nearly all of Texas, including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. Far western communities around El Paso use Mountain Time and are one hour behind the Central portion of the state.
Texas observes daylight saving in both zones. Central locations alternate between CST, UTC−6, and CDT, UTC−5. The Mountain Time area alternates between MST, UTC−7, and MDT, UTC−6. The two regions retain their one-hour separation when their clocks change seasonally. Texas is large enough that even “What time is it?” may need a county attached.
Texas cities and time-zone choices
Houston is the state’s largest city. San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth are also major population centers, and all follow Central Time. El Paso is the notable major-city exception because it follows Mountain Time. Other large Central Time cities include Arlington, Corpus Christi, and Plano.
Before relying on a Texas time, check the following: Use Central Time for most Texas destinations. Use Mountain Time for El Paso and locations in Hudspeth County. State CT or MT on schedules involving far western Texas.
Account for daylight saving when converting local time to UTC. Do not confuse El Paso’s clock with that of Dallas or Austin. The distinction matters on long drives, remote meetings, transportation timetables, and live events. A phone may update when it enters a new zone, but an itinerary should still specify the intended local time. “Texas time” alone is usually Central Time in casual usage, yet it is not accurate for every part of the state.
Sunrise across a wide state
Texas covers a broad range of longitudes and latitudes, so sunrise varies meaningfully between cities. An eastern city and El Paso do not share one solar schedule. Their different civil time zones also affect the hour shown on the clock when sunrise occurs.
Season changes both day length and the position of sunrise along the horizon. Summer typically brings earlier mornings and longer daylight, while winter has later dawn and shorter days. Exact results require a date because sunrise changes continually through the year.
Local geography also influences visibility. Buildings, hills, coastal conditions, and the observer’s elevation may determine when the sun can actually be seen. An astronomical listing represents a standard calculated event rather than a promise of a clear view.
Use the nearest city for ordinary planning and precise coordinates for remote sites, parks, ranches, or stretches of highway far from a listed community.
Questions and answers
- Is all of Texas in Central Time?
- No. Most is, but El Paso and Hudspeth counties use Mountain Time.
- Do Austin and Houston show the same time?
- Yes. Both cities follow Central Time and the same daylight-saving schedule.
- Why should I select a Texas city for sunrise?
- Texas is geographically wide, so longitude, latitude, time zone, and date change the local sunrise result.
