What time is it in Houston

What time is it in Houston is the civil hour in this Gulf city, on America/Chicago. The IANA name is a library tag. It does not put Houston in Illinois. It puts Houston on Central Time, which is the stamp this part of Texas actually uses. A clock downtown and a clock in a neighbourhood by the bayou should agree on the minute.

Texas is not one zone. El Paso uses Mountain Time. Houston does not. Treating “Texas time” as a single number is how a west-Texas call and a Houston call collide. Treating Houston as Eastern Time because it is a large American city is the other usual error. New York is one hour ahead of Houston in both winter and summer, because both cities change on the same federal Sundays.

Central Standard Time is UTC-6. Central Daylight Time is UTC-5. In 2026 the spring-forward is 8 March, when 02:00 becomes 03:00, and the fall-back is 1 November, when 02:00 becomes 01:00. The live clock includes the offset in force. A note that says “Houston is six hours behind UTC” is only true while standard time lasts.

Central Time on the Gulf

UTC-6 is built on 90°W. Houston lies west of that meridian, so solar noon arrives after 12:00 on the wall. Civil lunch and the sun’s peak are cousins, not twins. That lag is ordinary. It is not the city being slow, and it is not a reason to ignore daylight saving. The city does observe the federal change. The sun does not.

If a phone offers America/Chicago, America/Houston may be absent. Chicago is the correct civil choice for this city. America/New_York is the wrong civil choice. America/Denver is the wrong civil choice unless you meant El Paso. The map of the state is not a zone picker. The identifier is.

Winter: CST, UTC-6. Summer: CDT, UTC-5. Computer name: America/Chicago. Not Eastern Time, and not the same stamp as El Paso. Changeover: second Sunday of March, first Sunday of November. Write “09:00 Houston (America/Chicago)” on mixed invites. “09:00 CST” fails in summer, when the legal name is CDT, and it also collides with China Standard Time in international mail. Three letters are not enough work for two continents.

Texas is a map. Central Time is a law. Do not set a Houston call on a New York clock because both cities are large.

Sunrise on a long, low coast

Sunrise and sunset are calculated for Houston’s coordinates and the date. They are not a port schedule and not a campus bell. The land is low. Dawn is often a wide sky event rather than a mountain reveal. Humidity and haze can hide the disk and still leave the calculated instant in place. Trust the table for geometry. Trust the window for whether you can see a red rim.

June holds the long days; December holds the short ones. Daylight saving then shifts the civil labels of those events by an hour in the warmer months. A 20:00 summer evening is long because of latitude and later on the clock because of CDT. Keep those causes separate if you are trying to explain the day to someone on UTC.

Do not paste a Dallas sunrise here without checking. The civil stamp will agree. The minutes of first light may not. Do not paste a Galveston sunrise onto an inland neighbourhood either if you need precision. Close is not the same as this page.

Heat, humidity, and the civil hour

Houston’s climate is humid subtropical: a long, hot, humid warm season and a milder cool season, with Gulf moisture in the mix. That is the year’s pattern. The weather block on this page is the present condition. It is not a hurricane season essay and not a heat-index table. If you needed a warning, read a warning. If you needed the hour, read the clock.

Heat does not create CDT. A cool front does not restore CST. The March and November Sundays do. Outdoor work is a weather decision. A conference call is a zone decision. Mixing them produces a meeting that starts at the right temperature and the wrong minute, or the reverse.

Against Queens the gap is one hour and usually stable across the DST weekends. Against Arizona, check whether that place observes daylight saving; some do not, and the gap then breathes. Against Europe both sides jump, but not on the same dates. Named zones beat folklore.
