Petén follows Guatemala’s national practice of remaining on standard time without a seasonal clock adjustment. Its civil time is consistently six hours behind UTC. Phones and computers should use a Guatemala location setting rather than a foreign zone that happens to show the same hour today.

San Andrés covers a broad area west and north of Lake Petén Itzá. La Libertad is an important municipality in western Petén. Every municipality uses the same official time, but distances can be substantial. When booking transport, distinguish between Flores Island, Santa Elena, San Benito, an airport, and a remote destination; sharing a clock does not mean sharing a pickup point.

Petén’s sunrise is calculated from the observer’s coordinates and the date. Eastern and western parts of such a broad department can have slightly different astronomical times even though their clocks are identical.

A lakeside view may offer a relatively open horizon, while dense vegetation or uneven ground can postpone visible direct sunlight. Morning cloud can obscure the Sun altogether. These local effects change what an observer sees, not the underlying astronomical calculation.
