All of these places share one official time. Road journeys, however, can take longer than a map’s straight-line distance suggests because the island’s terrain channels routes around mountain ranges and along the coast. That is a travel consideration, not a clock difference.

Sunrise from west to east

Eastern Crete generally experiences astronomical sunrise before western Crete on a given date. A sunrise calculated for Sitia will therefore not be identical to one for Chania, even though both are read on the same Greek clock.

Local topography is just as important for what an observer sees. Mountain slopes can postpone direct sunlight in inland villages, while an unobstructed east-facing coast may reveal the sun close to the calculated moment. Buildings and headlands can also block the horizon.

Use exact coordinates and a date-specific listing for photography, hiking, sailing, or an early drive. Civil dawn begins before sunrise and describes a different stage of morning light. Weather affects visibility and colour, but it does not alter the underlying astronomical calculation.
