Current time in Athens

Athens is the reference clock for the country, and in software the zone is usually written Europe/Athens. Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion and the smallest Aegean island all read exactly the same hour.

Greece sits an hour ahead of Central European Time — so ahead of Rome, Berlin and Paris — and level with Bulgaria, Romania and Finland. That eastern position is the reason a summer evening in Athens stays bright noticeably later than the local solar clock alone would suggest.

EET and EEST

The two names for the Greek clock appear constantly in timetables and booking confirmations: EET — Eastern European Time, UTC+02:00, the winter standard EEST — Eastern European Summer Time, UTC+03:00, the summer setting

Ferry and flight schedules for the islands are published in local time, which means published departure hours are already correct for wherever in Greece you happen to be standing. There is no island exception to look up.

One zone across a very wide sea

Greece spans a substantial east-west stretch once the islands are counted. The far eastern Dodecanese lie considerably closer to the Anatolian coast than to Athens, yet they keep Athens time. So does Corfu, well to the west near the Albanian coast.

The result is a real difference in when the sun appears, without any difference in what the clock says. Sunrise arrives earlier in the eastern islands and later in the Ionian, and the gap is wide enough to notice on an early ferry.

Greece proves a small country can still be long. The clock rounds it to a single hour and lets the sun sort out the details.

The seasonal change

Greece observes daylight saving on the common European schedule, springing forward and falling back on the same dates as the rest of the EU. Since neighbours to the east and west move simultaneously, differences between Greece and other European countries stay constant across the transition.

Where it matters most is travel booked around the change dates: An overnight ferry crossing the spring transition loses an hour of scheduled sleep. An autumn crossing gains one. Connecting flights booked separately either side of a transition need their layover rechecked, not assumed.
