Current time in Bas-Congo, Democratic Republic Of The Congo
The historical name Bas-Congo remains common in indexes and older references, while the present province is Kongo Central. Both names refer to the western province stretching from Kinshasa’s vicinity toward the Atlantic coast.
Kongo Central uses West Africa Time, abbreviated WAT. Its offset is UTC+1, and daylight saving time is not observed. A clock in Matadi therefore maintains the same relationship to Coordinated Universal Time in every season.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo spans two time zones. This province belongs to the western zone, so users should not apply its clock to cities in the country’s eastern provinces. The Congo River can take a long route to the ocean; converting Matadi time only takes adding one hour to UTC.
Principal cities and towns
Matadi is the provincial capital and a major port on the Congo River. Boma is another important river port, while Muanda stands on the Atlantic coast. Inland towns connect the province with Kinshasa and neighbouring areas.
Matadi is the administrative capital. Boma is a significant historic and commercial centre. Muanda is the province’s coastal town. Mbanza-Ngungu is an important inland centre. Kisantu serves communities closer to the Kinshasa side of the province.
All these locations use WAT. Differences in stated appointment times should therefore arise from schedules or errors, not from municipal clock zones. When coordinating with eastern Congo, confirm the destination’s time because the eastern part of the country uses UTC+2.
Sunrise near the equator and Atlantic
Sunrise varies with the selected date, longitude, latitude, and local horizon. Bas-Congo lies close enough to the equator that seasonal changes in daylight are less dramatic than they are in high-latitude regions, but the time is not perfectly fixed from day to day.
Muanda and inland Matadi occupy different longitudes and landscapes, so one city’s sunrise should not be treated as exact for the other. Coastal haze, hills, cloud, and buildings can also alter when direct sunlight becomes visible.
Select Matadi, Boma, Muanda, or the nearest available location. Make sure the result is expressed in WAT, UTC+1. Use the correct local calendar date. Separate astronomical sunrise from weather and visibility.
Morning twilight precedes sunrise and may be more useful when planning travel or outdoor work. Anyone relying on direct sunlight should combine the solar time with local terrain and weather information.
