Current time in Kinshasa

The Democratic Republic of the Congo uses two time zones. The west, including Kinshasa, runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1. The east, including Lubumbashi and Goma, runs on Central Africa Time, UTC+2. Neither half observes daylight saving.

A country too wide for one clock

The DRC is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa, and its width from the Atlantic coast to the eastern lakes is enough to justify a genuine split. Most African countries manage on a single offset; this one does not, and the border between the two zones runs down the middle of the country.

Roughly, the division works out as: UTC+1, West Africa Time — Kinshasa, the Kongo Central province, Bandundu, Équateur and the western Kasai regions UTC+2, Central Africa Time — Lubumbashi and the Katanga provinces, Kisangani, Goma, Bukavu, and the eastern provinces along the Great Lakes

An hour separates the two. A call between Kinshasa and Goma is a domestic call that still requires a time-zone check — something most countries of comparable importance never have to think about.

The neighbours and the offsets

The DRC borders nine countries, and its two zones align with different ones. The Republic of the Congo, just across the river from Kinshasa, keeps UTC+1 — so Brazzaville and Kinshasa, the two closest capital cities in the world, read the same hour. Rwanda, Burundi and Zambia, on the eastern side, keep UTC+2, matching the eastern Congolese provinces.

This means the offset does not jump at most of the DRC's borders. It jumps inside the country instead. Brazzaville and Kinshasa face each other across a river and agree on the hour. Kinshasa and Goma share a government and do not.

No daylight saving in either zone

Neither Congolese time zone observes daylight saving. The country straddles the equator, so day length is close to constant everywhere in it: the sun rises and sets at roughly the same hours in January and July alike. There is no seasonal darkness to compensate for and nothing for a clock change to achieve.

For anyone coordinating from abroad, that stability is useful. The two offsets, UTC+1 and UTC+2, hold every day of the year. Only the other end of the call moves.

Practical guidance

Midday in Kinshasa is 11:00 UTC; midday in Lubumbashi is 10:00 UTC. Always specify which city — "Congo time" is ambiguous within the country itself. Domestic flights cross the zone boundary, so scheduled arrival times can look shorter or longer than the actual flight.

Kinshasa shares an offset with Lagos and Luanda; the eastern provinces share one with Kigali, Lusaka and Johannesburg.

Questions and answers

How many time zones does the DRC have?
Two: UTC+1 in the west, including Kinshasa, and UTC+2 in the east, including Lubumbashi and Goma.
Does the DRC use daylight saving time?
No. Neither zone changes its clocks at any point in the year.
Is Kinshasa the same time as Brazzaville?
Yes. Both cities are on UTC+1, despite sitting on opposite banks of the Congo River in different countries.
