Year of the tiger
The Year of the Tiger is one animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac. It starts at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. The last opening was 1 February 2022. The next is 19 February 2034.
How it works
The Chinese zodiac names a twelve-year cycle of animals. Tiger is one of the twelve. The animal year does not open on the Gregorian new year. It opens on Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival, which falls between late January and mid-February. If you were born in January or early February, your animal may be the previous year’s, because the lunar year had not yet turned.
A holiday page treats the Tiger year as a feast-year label, not as a personality test. The public holiday is Lunar New Year and the days around it, set by each country that keeps the festival. The animal is the name of that lunar year. Saying “Year of the Tiger” without a lunar new year date is like saying “summer” without a hemisphere.
The twelve animals repeat. Recent Tiger years include 2010, which opened on 14 February 2010, and 2022, which opened on 1 February 2022. After 2022 the cycle has to walk through Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, and Ox before Tiger returns on 19 February 2034. That 2034 new year is a Sunday. The lunar year then runs until the next new year in 2035.
Tiger years on the civil calendar
Write both clocks. Gregorian 2022 held an Ox stretch in January, then Tiger from 1 February to 31 December. The Rabbit year opened on 22 January 2023. Gregorian 2034 will contain the Tiger opening on 19 February and will still have been an Ox year in January. A birthday on 10 January 2022 fell before that year’s lunar new year, so it sat at the end of the previous animal year, not at the start of the Tiger year. The civil birthday did not move. The animal label did.
Find the Lunar New Year date for the year you mean. Treat that date as the turn of the animal year. If the birthday is in January or early February, check which side of that turn it sits on. Do not use 1 January as the tiger’s opening.
Countries that keep Spring Festival as a public holiday publish their own run of days off around that new year. Those closures are the holiday. The animal name rides along. A workplace in a country that does not close for Lunar New Year can still note the Tiger year as a cultural mark. Noting it does not create a federal Monday in the United States.
A year, not a single feast Monday
Christmas is a date. The Year of the Tiger is a span. Inside it sit ordinary Tuesdays, other festivals on the lunisolar calendar, and the Gregorian holidays that do not care which animal is on the banner. Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month and closes the new-year stretch in many households. That is a dated feast inside the year, not a second zodiac animal.
Do not file lucky numbers, lucky colours, or character sketches as measurements. Those lists are folklore. This page will not invent them. What it will hold is the cycle, the turn dates it can name, and the reminder that a holiday year in this sense is lunar. If you need a countdown, countdown to 19 February 2034, or to the next Spring Festival of the year you are in, not to a tiger that is already walking the twelve-year path in the past.
A tiger on the zodiac is a year with a door. The door is Lunar New Year. 1 January is a different house.
