Year made

Year made is the calendar year when an object was produced. It is a four-digit year stamp, not a weekday, not a season, and not the year you bought the thing.

How it works

A “year made” field answers one question: in which civil year did this object leave the press, the mould, the yard, or the factory gate. Unless the maker says otherwise, read the number as a Gregorian year from 1 January through 31 December. It does not tell you the month. It does not tell you the week. An item stamped 2024 may have been finished on 2 January or on 31 December. Those days share a year and share almost nothing on a planner.

Purchase year and production year part as soon as goods sit in a warehouse over New Year. A kettle bought in January may have been made in the previous autumn. A form that asks “year made” usually wants the production stamp, not the receipt. A form that asks “model year” may want a sales season that opened before 1 January of the year in the brochure. Copy the label the form named. If both numbers exist, write both.

Two-digit years are how 1999 and 1899 get confused on a dusty plate. Prefer four digits. A copyright line is not a production year. “© 2018” on a book or a disc is a claim of right in that year, or a pile of years. It does not prove the copy in your hand was manufactured in 2018. For physical year made, look for a mould stamp, a printer’s code, a dated packing slip, or a plate. For a holiday object — an ornament, a tin, a dated plate — the year printed on the front is often the issue year, which may match production and may be a collection year the maker chose.

Read the year as a civil year unless the maker names another era. Do not upgrade a year stamp into a birthday with a month you do not have. Do not swap it for the year on the receipt. Keep model year and production year separate when both appear.

Do not treat a copyright year as a factory date. Age in whole years is then a subtraction: this calendar year minus year made, with a remainder you cannot see without a month. On 3 September 2026 a tool stamped 2019 is in the 2026 civil year, seven years after 2019 as labels go, and still of unknown age in days. Leap years affect the day count inside a span, not the year stamp itself. 2024 was a leap year. 2026 is not. 2027 is not. The stamp does not change because February once had a 29. The year on the plate is a bin, not a birthday party. Do not light candles for a gearbox.

When the year on the object is doing holiday work

Dated Christmas ornaments, “first Christmas” frames, and commemorative tins carry a year because the maker wants a collection, not because 25 December moved. The year on the bauble is the issue. The feast is still Friday 25 December 2026 this year. A 2012 ornament is not late to this Friday; it is from an earlier issue. A “year made” search in December is often someone turning a mug over at a stall. If there is no stamp, there is no year. Guessing is not dating.

Cars and some appliances encode a model year in a VIN or a plate that can disagree with the calendar year of assembly. A vehicle sold as a 2025 model can have been built in late 2024. That is a sales overlap, not a defect in June or December. Registration and insurance often want the model year. A repair log that cares about metal age may want the production date. Ask which stamp the desk in front of you is using.

If a form about a holiday hire — a marquee, a generator, a second-hand tree stand — asks year made, they want condition and parts, not nostalgia. Give the stamp you can see. If you cannot see one, say so. Inventing 2018 to fill a box is how a spare part arrives for the wrong revision.

Questions and answers

Is year made the same as the year I bought it?
No. Stock can sit into the next calendar year. Production year and purchase year are different stamps.
Can a 2025 model be made in 2024?
Yes. Model years often open before 1 January of the year in the name.
Can I get an exact age from year made alone?
Not to the day. The year only places the object inside that year’s span.
