There are two honest answers, and they are not the same number. Payroll often uses an average: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year, and 2,080 divided by 12 is about 173.33 hours a month. That figure is a smoothing tool for a salary. It is not a count of the Mondays in October.

The calendar answer is weekday math. Count the workdays in that month, multiply by the hours in your day, then subtract holidays your job actually observes, then add overtime you actually worked. An eight-hour, Monday–Friday job lands on 160 hours in a 20-workday month, 168 in a 21-day month, 176 in a 22-day month, and 184 in a 23-day month. February is the short one. A 31-day month with five weekdays in several weeks is the long one. Public holidays, unpaid leave, and a four-day week all move the total. A 35-hour week scales the same way: 35 times 52, divided by 12, is about 151.67 as an average, with the real month still following the days on the page.

Sleep is the hours that are not on the timesheet and still have to come from the same month. A 30-day month has 720 clock hours in it. If you work 176 and sleep 8 hours a night, that sleep block is 240 hours — more than the job. Treat the sleep block as scheduled, or the 176 will quietly eat it.

Clock hours versus the night you still owe

A month with 184 working hours is not only “a busy month.” It is more mornings that start with an alarm and more evenings that can slide late. The extra days are extra commutes and extra chances to steal from bedtime. A short February is not extra rest unless you actually keep the nights. People fill the gap with projects. The body still wants the same sleep it wanted in January.

Shift work and overtime break the 173 average on purpose. A 12-hour roster can put more than 184 hours on a month without looking like a 23-day office calendar. Count the shifts you are on, not the weekday grid you wish you had. Then count the sleep between them. Two 12-hour days with a 6-hour night in the middle is not a 24-hour work problem only. It is a sleep problem the timesheet will not flag.

Average full-time month at 40 hours a week: about 173 hours (2,080 ÷ 12). Actual eight-hour month: 160, 168, 176, or 184 depending on how many weekdays sit in that month. Holidays and leave subtract; overtime adds. Do not skip that step.

Sleep: schedule it as hours in the same month, or work will take them. A 173-hour average on paper is not a license to spend the rest of the month awake.

When the month is longer than the paycheck math

If you are hourly, a 23-workday month pays more than a 20-workday month at the same daily hours. If you are salaried on the 173 average, you work the days that exist and the pay does not move with them. Neither system prints your bedtime. The useful check is weekly, not monthly: did this week contain a full night most nights, or did the extra Thursday become a 11 p.m. email and a 5:30 a.m. alarm?

To get the number for a named month, open a calendar, mark the days you are scheduled, multiply, subtract the holidays that apply to you, and stop. Do not import another country’s workweek. Do not import a 24-hour day and call 720 hours “working hours.” Those are clock hours in a 30-day month, not labor. Keep the words separate and the night stays visible.
