4 day work week
A 4 day work week is four scheduled workdays inside a seven-day calendar week. It does not rename the weekdays, and it does not move a public holiday by itself.

What the first day of the week is, on a four-day schedule, is a labelling problem. Payroll, rotas, and ISO weeks often treat Monday as day one. Wall calendars in the United States often print Sunday on the left. A 4 day work week that runs Monday through Thursday has Monday as the first workday. It does not make Sunday stop being Sunday. The names of the seven days stay put. Only the work marks change.
What day of the week is it, and what day of the week is it today, are questions about the civil name of today’s date. They are not questions about whether you are on shift. Today can be Wednesday whether your week contains four workdays or five. A four-day rota that “skips Friday” still has a Friday on the wall. The Friday is a rest day, a holiday, or another job. It is still Friday.
If two people in the same house use different first days, their “week” boxes will not line up. One person’s week starts Sunday night. The other person’s week starts Monday morning. A four-day plan has to name which box it sits in, or the fourth day will be Thursday in one planner and Friday in the other.
Four workdays, seven calendar names
There is more than one shape. Four days of longer shifts can keep weekly hours close to a five-day job. Four shorter days cut hours. A rotating four-on pattern can ignore Monday-as-start entirely and simply count four on, then off. Those are different machines. The slogan “4 day work week” hides the split. Write the four dates, the hours on each date, and which weekday is the usual off day.
What day of the week you work is then a list, not a mystery: Monday through Thursday, Friday off, is a common office shape. Tuesday through Friday, Monday off, is the same length with a different rest day.
Four tens on a rotating start day is a shift pattern, not a civic week. A holiday week still contains seven named days. The four marks may move. Ask “what day of the week is it today” with a calendar, then ask whether today is one of your four. Those are two checks. People collapse them into one sentence and then argue with payroll. Payroll is counting workdays and hours against a defined week. The sky is naming the weekday. Neither check cares about the slogan on a poster.
Holidays that land on the day you already rest
Public holidays in many countries sit on Mondays: a civic long weekend built for a five-day, Monday-start office. On a Monday-through-Thursday week, that Monday is a workday, so the holiday still removes a workday. On a Tuesday-through-Friday week, a Monday holiday can land on the day you already rest. Then the question is local policy: do you get another day, or was the holiday already your off day. This page cannot invent that policy. The employer’s holiday table can.
Christmas, Thanksgiving in the United States, and other dated feasts do not ask whether your week has four days. They ask for a date. If the feast is a Wednesday, a four-day week that includes Wednesday loses that Wednesday or pays it as holiday, according to the same table a five-day week would use. The four-day shape does not erase the feast. It only changes which remaining days are still work.
If the wall starts the week on Sunday and the rota starts it on Monday, you already have two weeks. The fourth workday will not save the labels. When someone asks what day of the week it is, answer with the name. When they ask whether they must come in, answer with the rota and the holiday table. Keep the name and the duty on separate lines. A 4 day work week is a duty pattern. The week is still seven named days, including the feast days that refuse to move.
