There is no single number of work days this year that fits every reader. A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366. Each year contains 52 full weeks plus one leftover day, or two leftover days in a leap year. Fifty-two weeks already contain 260 weekdays if you treat Monday through Friday as the working week. The leftover day or days then add weekdays or weekend days depending on which weekdays the year begins and ends on. That is why two years can have different weekday totals even before anyone mentions a holiday.

Holidays then cut the weekday total. Which holidays count is a local fact: country, region, and often the employer. A bank calendar, a school calendar, and a factory calendar can disagree in the same city. “How many work days this year” is therefore a weekday count minus a named holiday list, not a number you can copy from a stranger’s year planner.

If you need this year’s figure for one workplace, take this year’s first date and last date, count weekdays in that closed year, then subtract the holidays that workplace observes when they fall on a weekday. Do not subtract a holiday that already fell on Saturday or Sunday unless that workplace also observes a substitute weekday.

Start with the year’s length: 365 or 366 days. Count weekdays, not just divide by seven and multiply by five without checking the leftover days. Subtract observed holidays that land on a weekday. Apply any observed substitute day when a holiday sits on a weekend. State the country or employer next to the result.

Work days between dates

Work days between dates are not the same as calendar days between dates. A two-week span from a Monday to the Monday a fortnight later is 14 calendar days later. Inside a plain Monday-to-Friday week, that window holds 10 weekdays if you count the working days of the two weeks and you have not included the second Monday, or 11 if that second Monday is included. The endpoint rule still matters. Work it out in words before you work it out in numbers: does the last date count as a work day in the job, or is it the day after the job ends?

A fast manual method is to split the span into full weeks and a stub. Each full week contributes five weekdays under a Saturday-Sunday weekend. Then inspect each leftover date. Then remove holidays. Excel’s NETWORKDAYS does this with a default Saturday-Sunday weekend. NETWORKDAYS.INTL lets you mark a different weekend. Neither function knows your holidays until you pass a list.

Work days this year are not a printed constant. They are weekdays minus the holidays you actually observe, and nobody else’s poster can finish that sentence for you.

When “work out” still means calendar days

Some people say “work out the days” and mean ordinary subtraction, not labour. If the task is rent, a course length, or a waiting period written in calendar days, do not reach for NETWORKDAYS. Work out the calendar difference, then stop. Mixing the two is how a ten-day waiting period becomes two weeks of weekdays and a surprised deadline.

If the range crosses a leap day, the calendar total grows by one compared with a non-leap window with the same month and day numbers. The weekday pattern grows with it. Leap day is a real Wednesday or Thursday or whichever weekday it is that year; treat it as a date, not as a rumour.
