Women s equality day
Women's Equality Day is 26 August in the United States, the anniversary of the 1920 certification of the Nineteenth Amendment. It is not International Women's Day, and it is not a federal closing.
is today international women's day
Look at the numbered date, not at a pink graphic. International Women's Day is 8 March. Women's Equality Day is 26 August. If today is Thursday 3 September 2026, it is neither. 8 March 2026 was a Sunday and has already gone; the next 8 March is Monday 8 March 2027. 26 August 2026 was a Wednesday and has already gone; the next Women's Equality Day is Thursday 26 August 2027.
A workplace breakfast in September does not rewrite March. A suffrage post in March does not rewrite August. The two days share a subject and refuse to share a square. In the United States, neither date is a federal holiday. Banks, mail, and ordinary offices follow the weekday in front of them unless some other closing already applies.
People type “is today international women's day” on this page because the two names sit next to each other in search. Answer the March question first, then stay on August. If you needed a greeting for 8 March, this is the wrong anniversary. If you needed the U.S. suffrage date, you are in the right month of the year and, from early September, you are already past this year's square.
What 26 August actually marks
The Nineteenth Amendment forbids denying the vote on the basis of sex. Tennessee's ratification on 18 August 1920 supplied the last state needed. The amendment was not finished as a civic fact until U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the proclamation on 26 August 1920. Women's Equality Day commemorates that certification, not the earlier House or Senate votes, and not the long campaign that preceded them.
Congress later asked the President to proclaim 26 August each year. Representative Bella Abzug pressed the designation in the early 1970s. A 1972 presidential proclamation used the wording “Women's Rights Day.” In 1973 Congress approved a joint resolution that named 26 August Women's Equality Day and asked for an annual proclamation. Presidents have issued those proclamations since. A proclamation is not a paid Monday. It is a dated instruction to remember the amendment.
The 50th anniversary of the amendment, 26 August 1970, also saw the Women's Strike for Equality, a public demonstration that helped put the August date back on the civic wall. The strike is part of how the day was revived. It is not a second legal holiday.
International Women's Day: 8 March, worldwide observance. Women's Equality Day: 26 August, U.S. commemoration of the 1920 certification. Susan B. Anthony Day: 15 February, a different named square. U.S. federal status for 26 August: commemorative, not a bank close.
A March greeting on an August morning is still kind. It is still the wrong amendment anniversary.
What the day does not settle
The Nineteenth Amendment did not put a ballot in every woman's hand the same morning. Black women, and other women facing Jim Crow rules, intimidation, and later devices aimed at the same result, still had to win access that the amendment alone did not deliver. The Voting Rights Act sits on a later shelf. Women's Equality Day can name that unfinished work without pretending 1920 closed it.
Pay, safety, office custom, and family law are not rewritten at sunrise on the 26th. The day is a commemorative square. A school lesson, a museum talk, or a city proclamation can sit on it. None of those events is required by the federal holiday table, because the date is not on that table.
Do not “observe it on Friday” as if it were a Monday holiday. 26 August stays 26 August. If the 26th is a Sunday, the commemoration is Sunday. If a group meets on the nearest weekday, that meeting is a meeting. The numbered day does not move.
