Wifi speed test
A Wi-Fi speed test sends data to a remote server and reports download, upload, and delay. It measures the path you are on now, not the number printed on the router box.
How it works
Your device exchanges data with a test server. Download is how fast data arrives. Upload is how fast data leaves. Delay, often shown as ping or latency, is how long a small message takes to go there and back. The three numbers describe different jobs: fetching a file, sending a file, and reacting quickly.
The path includes your radio link to the access point, the home network, the internet service, and the route to that server. A slow result can come from any hop. The test does not isolate “Wi-Fi only” unless you compare: same device on Ethernet, same device next to the router, same device at the far sofa.
Run the test on the network you care about. A result on cellular is not a Wi-Fi result. A result on a guest network is not your main network. Close a large download if you want a cleaner reading; other traffic shares the same path.
Stand where you actually use the network. Use the same device you usually use. Start the test and wait until download, upload, and delay appear. Repeat once if the first run looks unusually low or high.
One run is a snapshot. Two similar runs are more believable than a single surprise. Do not average in a run taken while a backup is uploading and then treat the average as the line’s true speed.
Speed test Wi-Fi, Google’s test, and IP tests
A speed test Wi-Fi run is still an internet path test that happened to use Wi-Fi as the first hop. If you need to know whether the radio is the weak link, compare with a cable to the router when you can. If cable is fine and Wi-Fi is not, the wireless hop is the suspect.
A wifi speed test google result usually means the built-in test in Google Search after you look up a speed test. A google wifi speed test in that sense is the same kind of measurement: your device, a Google-provided test, download and upload figures. It is not a special reading of Google Wifi hardware unless you are actually using that hardware and a tool made for it.

Next to the router: a ceiling for this access point and this device. Where you sit: the number that matches real use. On Ethernet: a comparison that can show whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. On a VPN: a different path; turn the VPN off if you want the plain line.
What the numbers are not
They are not the marketing rate on the box of the access point. They are not a promise from the ISP of a Wi-Fi rate in every room. They are not a diagnosis by themselves. A low upload with a high download is common on many home lines; that pattern is about the service profile, not a broken radio, if Ethernet shows the same shape.
Move one variable at a time. Change rooms, then devices, then wired versus wireless. If every test is slow, including a wired one, talk to the service path. If only the far room is slow, the radio or the walls are the first place to look.
A test taken beside the router describes the router. A test taken on the sofa describes the sofa. Write down where you stood and which device you used. A number without a place cannot be compared next week. Then run the same test in the same spot if you change a setting. That is the whole method: same question, one change, new snapshot.
