Whitsun weekend

How it works

Weekdays do the work on this page. Saturday is the day before Whit Sunday. Sunday is the feast. Monday is Whit Monday. Together they are the Whitsun weekend people still name when they mean that late-spring break, even in years when Monday is an ordinary workday.

Find Easter Sunday first. Count seven Sundays, including Easter as the first of those if you are counting weeks of Sundays, or count fifty days from Easter inclusive: Whit Sunday is Pentecost. The Saturday of the weekend is the date immediately before that Sunday. Whit Monday is the date immediately after. You cannot pick a nicer Monday and still call it Whit Monday. The Monday is glued to that Sunday.

Because Easter slides, the weekend slides. It sits in May in some years and in June in others. It is not, by church rule, the last weekend of May. The religious Sunday is one peg. The civil Monday in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland is another: the last Monday in May, the Spring Bank Holiday, which only sometimes is Whit Monday. Scotland has its own late-May holiday pattern. Do not assume one Monday covers the island.

Saturday: the weekday before Whit Sunday. Sunday: Whit Sunday, also called Pentecost. Monday: Whit Monday — a workday unless a separate holiday rule says otherwise that year. Tuesday to Friday after Whit Sunday: Whit weekdays, not the weekend.

In 2026 Whit Sunday is 24 May. The long weekend is therefore 23 May (Saturday), 24 May (Sunday), and 25 May (Monday). That Monday is also the UK Spring Bank Holiday, because 25 May 2026 is the last Monday in May. The overlap is a fact of 2026. It is not a new definition of Whitsun.

When Monday is still a workday

In 2027 Whit Sunday is 16 May. Whit Monday is 17 May, which is not the last Monday in May. The Spring Bank Holiday in 2027 is 31 May. A British office can work on Whit Monday and rest two weeks later. Booking “the Whitsun weekend” as if it were always the late-May holiday will put someone on the wrong train.

If you need church, keep Whit Sunday. If you need a UK day off work, keep the published Spring Bank Holiday. If you need an office in a country that still closes on Pentecost Monday, ask that country: their Monday is Whit Monday, not “last Monday in May.” Three diaries can name three different weekdays in one year.

A weekend named after a Sunday will not wait for the last Monday in May. The Sunday moves; the nickname tries to follow. The Friday before is an ordinary Friday unless a workplace has added a local shutdown. Whitsun weekend does not swallow Friday by itself. It holds Saturday and Sunday, and it holds Monday only where Monday is actually a holiday that year. Whit week, the older phrase for the days after Whit Sunday, is longer than a weekend. Do not pack a whole Whit week into two days and call the suitcase a weekend.
