White day
White Day is 14 March, a return-gift date one month after Valentine’s Day. It is a social holiday on the spring calendar, not a nationwide day off by itself.
How it works
In Japan and in several nearby countries, 14 February is widely treated as a day to give chocolate. White Day, on 14 March, is the dated reply. The pair is two fourteenths, not a floating Monday and not a lunar feast. You do not wait for the next weekend. You do not wait for a full moon. The civil calendar already printed both squares.
Confectionery sellers in Japan promoted a return-gift day in the late 1970s. Company stories disagree about who coined the name, so this page does not appoint a founder. What is stable is the date and the job: answer the February gift in March, often with sweets, sometimes with a small present of another kind. South Korea, Taiwan, and parts of China also mark 14 March in this way. Local manners differ. The square on the wall does not.
White Day is not Christmas, not a bank holiday, and not a school closing merely because it has a name. Offices follow an ordinary March timetable unless some other holiday shares the date. Shops may run displays. That is commerce sitting on a known square, the same way they sit on Valentine’s Day.
A return-gift holiday, not a day off
Treat White Day as an appointment if someone is keeping the custom with you. Treat it as an ordinary Thursday, Friday, or Saturday if they are not. The weekday of 14 March changes every year. The obligation, where people feel one, is social. It is not a statute. Nothing on the March page requires candy. Nothing on the March page closes the post office under this name alone.
Holiday planning here means deliveries, reservations, and shop hours on a mid-March date, not a long weekend. If you are sending a gift across a border, pin 14 March in the recipient’s time zone. A parcel that arrives on 15 March is a day late for people who treat the fourteenth as the point. A parcel that arrives on 13 March is early, which some people prefer. The calendar will not referee taste. It will referee the square.
Valentine’s Day: 14 February, the first gift in this pair. White Day: 14 March, the dated return. Leap years add a day to February, not a move to 15 March. No U.S. federal closing under this name. Valentine’s Day asks. White Day is the dated answer, not a rain check you can cash on any convenient Saturday.
Pairing Valentine’s with the next fourteenth
Because February is short, “one month later” is a date match, not a count of thirty equal days. In a common year the span from 14 February to 14 March is twenty-eight days. In a leap year it is twenty-nine. White Day does not slide to make the span pretty. People who set a thirty-day timer on the night of Valentine’s Day will be late. Set the reminder on 14 March.
After 14 March the next White Day is 14 March of the following year. There is no summer White Day. There is no transfer to the Monday after. If 14 March falls in the same week as another local holiday, you may get a crowded shop or a closed one for that other reason. Check the other reason. Do not blame White Day for a closing it does not own.
If you keep both fourteenths, you are keeping a two-step spring custom. If you keep neither, the dates still sit there, the way many named food days sit there. The calendar offers the slot. The household decides whether to use it.
