When was mlk day can mean two honest pasts. One is the last observance: the third Monday of the January just gone. From a September 2026 vantage that Monday was 19 January 2026. The other is the origin: when the United States first kept the day as a federal holiday. That was 20 January 1986, also a third Monday, also in winter.

The statute is older than the first observance. President Ronald Reagan signed Public Law 98-144 on 2 November 1983, placing the legal public holiday on the third Monday in January. The first nationwide federal closing under that law waited until January 1986. States and cities had already marked King’s January 15 birthday in some places as early as 1970. Those local winter days were not yet the federal Monday.

King was born 15 January 1929 in Atlanta. He was assassinated 4 April 1968 in Memphis. The April date is spring and is not MLK Day. People who remember “the week Dr. King was killed” are remembering a different season and a different kind of anniversary. The holiday that schools close for is the January Monday named for the birthday.
