When is three kings day

Three Kings Day is January 6. In much of the Christian world that date is Epiphany, the winter feast of the Magi. It is not day three of Christmas.

when is three kings day

January 6 does not float. If the 6th is a Tuesday, Three Kings Day is Tuesday. If it is a Sunday, it is Sunday. The civil square stays put even when a parish moves the Sunday Mass of Epiphany to a nearby weekend. In Spanish-speaking homes the same date is Día de los Reyes, the day children often look for gifts from the three kings rather than from a December visitor.

In the Northern Hemisphere January 6 sits in meteorological winter: December, January, and February. Astronomical winter has already begun at the December solstice, so the feast is a dark-season date in the north, with short daylight and, in many places, leftover Christmas greenery still in the house. In the Southern Hemisphere January is summer. The calendar label is shared. The weather is not.

Some Eastern churches keep Theophany on January 6 of the Julian calendar, which currently falls on January 19 of the Gregorian civil calendar. That is a later winter date, not a second January 6. If your question is the Latin and Hispanic Three Kings Day used in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and much of the United States, the answer remains January 6.

Winter date, not day three

People also type day three when they mean a numbered day inside the Christmas stretch. Those are different squares. If Christmas Day, December 25, is counted as day one of Christmas, then day two is December 26 and day three is December 27. That late-December weekday is still inside the Twelve Days. It is not the kings’ feast.

Three Kings Day closes that stretch, it does not open the third morning after Christmas. The traditional Western count runs from December 25 through January 5 as the Twelve Days, with Twelfth Night on the 5th and Epiphany on the 6th. Other households count the twelve days as December 26 through January 6. Either way, day three is still in December. January 6 is the manifestation to the Magi, not a third-day party.

Three Kings Day / Epiphany (Latin civil date): January 6 every year. Eve of the kings in many Spanish cities: the evening of January 5, with processions before the 6th. Day three of Christmas, counting December 25 as day one: December 27.

Julian Theophany on the civil calendar used by some Eastern churches: January 19 at present. If you mark day three, you are still in December. The kings arrive in January, and they do not come early to match a three-day weekend.

January 6 in the Christmas season

The Gospel story attached to the date is the visit of the Magi in Matthew, with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Later Christian naming called them kings and, in much Western art, gave them the names Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. This page treats that as the feast’s story, not as a shipping log. What the calendar needs is simpler: a fixed January morning after the December feasts.

In the United States, January 6 is not a federal closing holiday. Banks and post offices follow an ordinary weekday. Some schools and workplaces with a strong Hispanic community may note the date. Most will not shut. In Spain the 6th is a public holiday. Local law, not the season, decides whether you have the day off. Winter light does not close a shop by itself.

A common mix-up is to treat Three Kings Day as a movable Monday in January, the way some civil holidays jump. It does not. Another mix-up is to wait until the first Sunday in January and call that the only date. A Sunday Mass of Epiphany can be a pastoral transfer. The folk date for shoes, rosca de reyes, and the cabalgata remains January 6. If you need 2027, it is still January 6. The year changes the weekday. It does not change the month or the season.

Questions and answers

When is Three Kings Day?
January 6 every year. In the north that is a winter date. It is not a U.S. federal holiday.
Is Three Kings Day the same as day three of Christmas?
No. Day three, counting December 25 as day one, is December 27. Three Kings Day is January 6.
Does the date move if January 6 is a weekday?
No. The feast stays on the 6th. A Sunday Mass nearby does not rewrite the civil square.
