There are two solstices. The June one is the northern summer solstice and the southern winter solstice. The December one is the southern summer solstice and the northern winter solstice. If you live north of the equator and you ask when the summer solstice is, you mean June. If you live south of the equator, you mean December. The word summer is local. The astronomy is one Earth.

In 2026 the June solstice falls on 21 June at 08:24 UTC. In time zones far enough west of UTC, that same instant can still be the evening of 20 June. In 2027 the June solstice is 21 June at 14:10 UTC. The December solstice in 2026 is 21 December at 20:50 UTC. In 2027 the December solstice is 22 December at 02:42 UTC, so some zones still show 21 December. Those are the instants. They are not opening ceremonies that run all afternoon.

When does summer solstice start, and when does the summer solstice start, are the same question with an extra the. The solstice does not start and then continue as a solstice for days. The season that people call astronomical summer starts at that instant in that hemisphere and runs until the next equinox. Meteorological summer in the north is the whole of June, July, and August, so it starts on 1 June, weeks before the June solstice.

A moment that starts a season

Astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the June solstice and ends at the September equinox. In 2026 that equinox is 23 September at 00:05 UTC. The solstice is the hinge, not the middle of the heat. Days in the north are at their longest around the June solstice, then they shorten. Longest day is not hottest day

Pack for daylight, then check the actual temperature for that town. Long light is not a promise of heat. Long light in a cool maritime June is not the same afternoon as long light in a hot December. The solstice only promised the Sun’s stand, not a beach.

After the northern summer solstice, each day is not suddenly winter. You still have astronomical summer until the September equinox and meteorological summer until the end of August. The light just stops stretching. People who feel cheated that evenings get earlier in July are watching the daylight clock, not the heat clock. Both clocks are real. Only one of them is the solstice.

The summer solstice is a timestamp on Earth’s tilt. Summer as heat can arrive earlier and linger later; the Sun does not wait for the picnic to catch up. If you need a calendar square, pick the local civil date of the June or December instant for your zone, and remember that a neighbour across a date line can print a different number. If you need a season, decide whether you are using the meteorological months or the astronomical hinges. The solstice will not choose for you.
