1 sep holiday
1 September is a public holiday only where a country named it one. The United States has no federal holiday on that date. Uzbekistan keeps Independence Day. Labor Day in 2026 was 7 September, not the 1st.
How it works
A first-of-September weekday is not a holiday by arithmetic. Searches for sep 1 holiday and sep 1st holiday are country questions wearing a numeral. In the United States the September federal close is Labor Day, the first Monday of the month. In 2026 that Monday was 7 September. In 2027 it is 6 September. When 1 September is a Tuesday, as in 2026, or a Wednesday, as in 2027, federal offices are open unless some other local rule applies. Do not treat the first of the month as Labor Day. The Monday is the rule. The first is an accident of the year, and in these two years it is not even close.
Uzbekistan’s 1 September is Independence Day, a national public holiday. The Supreme Council declared independence on 31 August 1991 and set the next day as the feast. Concerts and official ceremonies in Tashkent belong to that calendar, not to a U.S. school diary. Slovakia’s 1 September is Constitution Day, Deň Ústavy, marking the 1992 adoption of the constitution. It remains a state holiday on the Slovak list, but since 2024 it is not a day of rest from work: shops open and employees go in. A traveller who still expects a locked Bratislava on the first will find a working Tuesday.
In Russia and several other post-Soviet countries, 1 September is Knowledge Day, День знаний, the traditional start of the school year, established as a holiday date by a 1984 Soviet decree. Children often attend a morning assembly and a first bell. That is a school ritual. It is not a U.S. federal close, and it is not Uzbekistan’s independence parade even when both sit on the same numeral.
September 1 is not a U.S. red date
U.S. classrooms often reopen in mid-August or on a Tuesday after Labor Day, depending on the district. Some districts do start on or about 1 September. That start is a local PDF, not a national holiday. If a parent asked “is 1 Sep a holiday,” the honest American answer is: not federally, and probably not locally either unless the district wrote it down as a non-attendance day, which would be unusual for opening week.
United States: no 1 September federal holiday; Labor Day is the first Monday (7 September 2026; 6 September 2027). Uzbekistan: 1 September, Independence Day, public holiday. Slovakia: 1 September, Constitution Day; still named a state holiday, not a day off work since 2024.
Russia and several neighbours: 1 September, Knowledge Day, school opening, not a U.S. closing. Name the country. If the country is the United States, look at Labor Day’s Monday, not at the 1st. If you needed a school start, open the campus calendar for this year, not a holiday list.
If you needed Uzbekistan or Slovakia, use those tables, not the U.S. one. The first of September is a bell, a constitution, or an independence square, depending on the passport. It is almost never the American long weekend.
What to do with the numeral
If you are filing travel, read the destination’s list for that year. If you are filing a U.S. work roster, treat Tuesday 1 September 2026 as a workday unless your own contract says otherwise. If you are filing a school photograph from a Russian or Kazakh family, the flowers and the first bell belong to Knowledge Day. If you are filing a Tashkent trip, the fireworks belong to independence, and the school year there is planned around that public holiday rather than on top of it.
After 1 September 2026 the next 1 September is 1 September 2027, a Wednesday. The names on those squares stay. The U.S. Labor Day Monday will have moved again. Do not copy 7 September forward as a frozen number. Labor Day is a Monday. The first of September is only the first of September.
