Stand in 2026 and the next leap year is 2028. That is the dating answer. 29 February 2028 is a Tuesday. 2024 already used its extra day, on Thursday 29 February. Between those two leap years sit 2025, 2026, and 2027, each with 365 days and a February that stops at 28.

When is leap year is not a question like “when is autumn.” Autumn returns every year. A leap year returns most often every fourth year, and then only as a patch on February. You will not find it printed as a fifth season on a wall chart. You will find an extra square at the end of winter in the north, which is the end of summer in the south.

The patch exists because the seasons are tied to Earth’s trip around the Sun, and that trip is a little longer than 365 midnights. A calendar that never added a day would let March keep the name March while the equinox slid into another month. Anyone who plans by “spring” would be reading a label that no longer matched the light.

Putting the correction there keeps the long months stable: May still has 31 days in a leaping year, August still has 31, and December still has 31. Only the short month grows.

In much of the Northern Hemisphere that morning is still winter. March, and the northern spring equinox, come after it. In much of the Southern Hemisphere the same morning is late summer, with autumn still ahead. The civil date is shared. The weather is not. Leap day does not pick a hemisphere. It picks February.

If you were born on 29 February, the next civil date that matches is 2028, not 2026 and not 2027. Parties in the off years are a social choice, often held on 28 February or 1 March. The legal date, when a leap year actually contains it, is the 29th.

Next leap year from 2026: 2028. Last leap year before 2026: 2024. Next after 2028: 2032. Next skipped century: 2100. Divide the year by four. No remainder means “maybe.” Then check the century rule. 2028 passes both checks. 2026 fails the first and is done.

Seasons do not file paperwork. Leap day is the paperwork we add so their names stay on the right months. Do not budget 29 February in 2026 planning. The year has 365 days. March 1 follows February 28. Anyone writing a February 29 deadline on a 2026 form has pointed at a date that will not exist that year.

What leap year is not

It is not a holiday. Offices do not close because the year is leaping. It is not a change to the length of a week. Monday still follows Sunday. It is not a change to how many minutes are in an hour. Only the count of days in February, and therefore in the year, changes.

It is also not “summer time” or daylight saving. Those shift the clock relative to the sun for part of the year in places that use them. Leap day adds a calendar square. You can have a leap year in a country that never changes its clocks. You can have daylight saving in a common year. Mixing the two in one sentence is how people wait for an extra hour in February and never get one.
