when is thanksgiving this year

The U.S. date is a rule, not a feeling that November has gone on long enough. Count Thursdays in November. The fourth one is Thanksgiving. In 2026, 1 November is a Sunday, so the Thursdays are the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th. The holiday is Thursday, 26 November 2026. That is late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere: after Halloween, after Veterans Day, before the December feasts. The season is harvest language on a civil calendar that no longer depends on a farm’s last field.

“This year” means the year on the calendar you are holding. On this page that year is 2026. Next year you repeat the same rule on a new November. You do not reuse 26 November as if it were Christmas. Christmas is a number. U.S. Thanksgiving is a weekday-in-a-month.

Canada’s Thanksgiving is a different autumn and a different rule: the second Monday of October. In 2026 that Monday is 12 October. It is still a harvest holiday in the Canadian civil calendar, weeks earlier than the U.S. Thursday, in a season that can already have frost. If your family table crosses the border, you are looking at two autumns, not one moved dinner.

Autumn’s Thursday, and why it moves

Because the holiday is the fourth Thursday, the U.S. date runs from 22 November through 28 November. An early Thanksgiving is still autumn. A late one is still autumn. Neither is December. The Friday after the U.S. holiday is a shopping day for many retailers; it is not the holiday itself. The holiday is Thursday. Weekend travel is a consequence of the Thursday, not a second official date.

Federal offices, many schools, and many banks in the United States close on Thanksgiving Day. The Friday after is a common extra closure for schools and some offices, but it is not the same legal holiday as Thursday. Grocery hours on Wednesday are often longer; restaurant hours on Thursday are a separate local question. Autumn travel is heavy around this Thursday because the rule is national and the season already pulls people home before winter holidays.

For the United States in 2026: Thursday, 26 November. For Canada in 2026: Monday, 12 October. For a later year: apply the same weekday rules to that year’s October and November; do not copy 2026’s numbers.

Keep the U.S. fourth Thursday and the Canadian second Monday as two holidays, even when both are called Thanksgiving. If you are asking in September, U.S. Thanksgiving is still two months of autumn away and Canadian Thanksgiving may be about a month away. If you are asking on 20 November 2026, the U.S. table is six days off. The rule does not care when you asked. The season supplies the weather for the trip. The Thursday supplies the day.

The fourth Thursday is a counting rule. November does not become Thanksgiving because the trees are already bare.

This year is not last year’s date

Saved calendar entries from a previous November will lie. A table that says “Thanksgiving is the 23rd” was true in a year when the fourth Thursday was the 23rd. In 2026 it is not. Recurring phone events that were set to a number instead of “fourth Thursday of November” are a common way to miss the meal. Rebuild the date from the rule when the year changes.

Other countries use “thanksgiving” for other days or not at all. If you are not in the U.S. or Canadian civil calendars, do not import either autumn date. You will plan a closed office and an open school, or the reverse. Name the country, then apply that country’s rule, then enjoy the season you are actually in.
