The day sits inside Teacher Appreciation Week. National PTA has kept that week in early May since 1984, using the first Monday-through-Friday block that lies entirely in the month. The National Education Association marks National Teacher Day on that Tuesday. The weekday therefore moves a little from year to year, but it stays in early May. It does not jump to autumn, and it does not wait for the last day of school.

Early May in the Northern Hemisphere is late spring. Meteorological spring is March, April, and May. Astronomical spring runs from the March equinox to the June solstice. Either way, the day falls while the school year is still in session and before summer break in most U.S. calendars. That is the point of the date: teachers are still in the building. A thank-you in May reaches the classroom. A thank-you in July reaches a closed door.

The day is not a public holiday. Banks, post offices, and federal offices follow an ordinary Tuesday. Schools are usually in session unless that Tuesday is already a local in-service day. You do not get a three-day weekend from the observance itself. The season supplies longer evening light than winter. It does not supply a day off.

Late spring on the school calendar

May is when many districts are finishing tested units, concerts, and field days. The weather in much of the country has left the last frost behind and has not yet become the heat of July. Outdoor staff breakfasts and courtyard gatherings are seasonal choices, not rules. A rainy Tuesday in the Pacific Northwest is still Teacher Appreciation Day. The date does not move to the next clear afternoon.

World Teachers’ Day is a different mark: October 5, UNESCO’s date. India’s Teachers’ Day is September 5. Those are other seasons and other countries. The U.S. Tuesday in May is the answer to this search. Do not park a May card on October 5 and call the American date done.

Find the first full week of May (a Monday through Friday that all sit in May). Take the Tuesday of that week. That is Teacher Appreciation Day, also called National Teacher Day. Treat the rest of that week as Teacher Appreciation Week if you are planning more than one gesture.

May’s Tuesday is still a school day. Appreciation that fits a passing period will actually arrive.

Day versus week, and what the date is not

People mix the day and the week. The week is Monday through Friday of that first full May week. The day is Tuesday. A lunch on Thursday still counts as part of the week. The headline Tuesday is the one printed as National Teacher Day. Neither is a legal holiday. Neither closes a bank. A district can still choose its own staff-appreciation day in another month; that local date does not replace the national Tuesday.

The history is a spring story, not a winter one. Congress named March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day for that year. The NEA kept a March Tuesday for a stretch. After the PTA set a May week in 1984, the NEA moved National Teacher Day to the Tuesday of that week, and that is the rule still in use. The season changed from late winter to late spring on purpose: the thank-you now lands while class is in session, in the last full month of the ordinary school year in many places.

If you need a weekday for 2027, run the same rule. The first full week of May 2027 is May 3 through May 7; the Tuesday is May 4. The year changes the square on the calendar. It does not change the month or the season.
